The question isn’t the origin of the word BBQ or what BBQ represents. But rather, what is the origin of a “backyard BBQ”, which we are interpreting as a special type of entertainment gathering centered around the BBQ itself.

I am beginning to think that, for the sake of my original question, the suggestion by a CHSC member is that they are using the word backyard bbq as an event, not a style of cooking. I just recently learned that in Mexican/Latin cultures, an asada is an event that involves cooking outdoors. It does not just mean marinated skirt (or whatever cut) steak. I’ve linked to this book earlier.
