Do I dare say that BREAKFAST allows an incredible range of creativity?
You can make a bowl of cereal with mixed berries or peanut butter and jelly toast or you can eat leftover pizza or chili or burgers or omelets or any the hell thing.

I think it pretty obvious the next cook off has to be chili w/o beans and beans w/o chili... Anything else would be a crime against humanity.. I fully apologize to the blasphemers that want to combine the two, but well you are known as blasphemer's for a reason..

I like the idea of showcasing local cuisine. Maybe that one doesn't have to be a competition, but it would be cool spending a weekend seeing different regions of the country and the dishes that are common there.
Lots of good suggestions folks! Keep ‘em coming, we’re just getting started. WayneT , I was thinking we should keep this going all of next week to give everyone plenty of time to chime in with their ideas. It’s looking like we have several which seem to be popular ideas, according to the # of “likes” and comments. I was thinking that maybe this Saturday we could take the obvious front runners and start a poll. [maybe the top 4 or 5] The suggestion with the most votes could be our next cookoff for Labor Day……thoughts?
barelfly It has for a very few people, but I believe by doing it on a holiday weekend it allows more time for people to do their cook..Fri-Mon. One thing I’ve found from past experiences, there’s usually never gonna be a weekend that works for everyone. To make up for people who can’t participate that weekend, they can always do it the week before and post it later when it starts. And….if someone does it after the holiday and puts it in the post, that’s cool too!
My off the wall idea would be a “distract us from this plate of food”. Basically cook your favorite meal and dress up in the weirdest possible costume. The photo then has to show your food and the costume. The “winner” is the one that succeeds in getting most of us to ignore the food. Perhaps better suited for Halloween.
Not sure I have a dog in this race, given I'm new and I've barely (if that) participated in anything thus far. I've been in a few work competitions, though, and heard about a few more. Given the variety of cookers, maybe focus on ingredients? How about:
eggs, any way but egg must be prominent ingredient
wings
dessert (or break it down, I won a cheesecake contest once at work, and that was pretty competitive and wide ranging, but they all look alike so involves tasting, really)
seafood
enchiladas (could be any kind from beef to pork to seafood, same with tacos)
gumbo
could do a "dog days of August" but might be too close to the burger dogs of July 4
All I have
Of course you have a dog in this race and you have some good suggestions! I particularly like the seafood or gumbo ideas! I could only imagine the beautiful seafood dishes shown from this group…..excellent idea if you ask me. Plus, seafood could be something everyone should be able to do, from fried catfish to shrimp scampi, clam dishes, lobster, salmon etc.
As a side note, Guy’s Grocery Games probably has some good ideas. I will post them if I remember any. We should probably get WillTravelForFood on it stat.
For years, animal expert Dave Seerveld had heard bits of "wildlife trivia" about an alleged link between armadillos and leprosy in Southern states. And he
I was also thinking seafood would be a good one since that could lead to a lot of variety. Regional sounds good as well. Since I live on the Chesapeake Bay regional could pretty easy become seafood for me...
