    Next Smackdown/Cook Off Ideas Wanted….

WayneT and I have been having a few discussions about what we can do for our next group cook/Smackdown or whatever. The ones we’ve done so far have been a lot of fun and very successful! In the last year and a half that we’ve been doing these, we’re beginning to run short of ideas, without repeating ourselves. There is one that SteveB has done the last 2 years, the Mr. Bones Memorial Rib Cook. That should continue as is, for the foreseeable future I’m assuming. While we always like to include as many Pit Members as possible, it doesn’t always work out that way, and that’s fine! For the Pellet Pooper vs Stickburner Smackdown, me and many other members didn’t have one and couldn’t participate….that was fine with me, we all had a blast just being in the background and watching everyone else.

What we’d like some help with, is some ideas for the next one. If you have any ideas, feel free to post them here. Remember, try to come up with something that a lot of people can participate in and would be fun. Full group participation is not a requirement though. If we’re gonna be stuck with something like a Sous Vide Smackdown, or whatever, I’ll pass. 😂 This could be a cooker vs cooker Smackdown or just a group cook of some type. Here’s the ones we’ve done so far, so we can eliminate these for now.

    1. PBC vs Bronco Smackdown
    2. Mr. Bones Memorial Rib Cook
    3. Pellet Pooper vs Stick burner Smackdown
    4. Steak Cook Off For Kathryn
    5. Chili Cookoff last November
    6. 4th of July Hamburger/Hot dogs Cook
    7. Memorial Day Brisket Cook
    8. January…Show Us Your Soup Cook

This is all that I can remember, have I missed any? Let me know if I left one out. Ok, here’s what I’ve got as an idea. With the huge growth the last few years of members getting griddles, [and woks] I was trying to think of something we could do with these. Anyone who doesn’t have a wok, can get one for as little as $20…..and up. I’m not saying this is the greatest idea, but it’s all I could come up with. Something like….

Stir Fry Smackdown: Wok vs Griddle!…..Everyone could put together their best stir fries on either a wok or a griddle of some type, whether a stand-alone griddle or an insert type. I was thinking about maybe doing something for Labor Day Weekend. Or, should we just hold off on doing anything else for a while? I’m all ears….thanks!

I have volunteered @WayneT to run the next one….. and he’s graciously accepted the offer.

Jerod Broussard Armadillos are delicious, it’s just that they carry leprosy. Old man Stap could cook one with potatoes and carrots that was wonderful. We quit hunting them when we found out about the leprosy thing.

I didn’t know about the January soup thing.
We make the Olive Garden soup Zuppa Toscano. It’s the real deal cause our son used to work at Olive Garden and making it was his position. I don’t think we can share the recipe.

I use to love that soup there, but they have changed their recipe and now it's very watered down. Like they went from heavy cream to non fat milk. There are copy cats recipes out there though.

We use heavy cream. I don’t like too much kale though. A small amount of kale on me is like eating three cups of pinto beans. Gas delux!

Panhead John Sure, you don’t need to go to a game. Just cook your favorite tailgate food. Good grief there are as many good tailgate foods as there are members. There are so many regional favorites that the diversity could be huge and I might see something I want to try. All kinds of burgers and dogs is just a start. Think of all the things people will do with shrimp, bacon, spices, beef, pork, and all the things that will be grilled and smoked. Show us your signature game day dish.

How 'bout a peanut butter and jelly smackdown? If that's too much for ya, you could do peanut butter or jelly.

With the best of intentions, PJ has delivered the kiss of death to this event by asking me to be the coordinator. If I graciously accept, it becomes more morbid, more quickly. I'll do it!!!

I've been giving some thought to the next smack down also. I really like the suggestions so far, but none of them are what I was considering.

One idea is an 'Out of Your Comfort Zone' Smack Down, where members have to cook something they don't normally cook and, things like brisket, ribs, pork butts, steaks, etc are not allowed, unless prepared in an originally creative way. Entries would be judged on four criteria: Originality (how different from what you normally cook), creativity (follow a recipe, tweak a recipe or strike out on your own), complexity (number of ingredients and tools used) and presentation. I know how creative people in AR can be so I won't countenance any whining about a lack thereof.

Another idea is a 'Joint Cook' Smack Down, where 2 or more Pit members collaborate to make a multi-course meal. Judges will score on: number of courses, how well the courses work together, wine/drink pairings (if any), and presentation. Again, no whining about too many moving parts. Y'all can do this.

That's all I've got for now. Anyone else got ideas they wish to share?
