Finally something we can all agree on…even them Texans!

We argue over beans - no beans. We argue about whether pellet poopers are even grills. We cant agree on BBQ sauce. Hell we cant even agree on wether we should even use BBQ sauce! Some think salt goes in rub, others say they are troglodytes and sciences says no. Lord we even argue over what goes on the burger first…..

However it has occurred to me that there is one thing we can all agree on…

    Fruitcake is AMAZING!!!

And just to kept the damn Texans in line, the best fruitcake actually comes from Texas! Collins Street Bakery makes ther worlds best and has for over 100 years..They have been a family tradition of ours for a couple decades and my grandmas home made for decades before that.

Fell free to chat amongst yourselves on the virtues of the fruitcake and lets see those beautiful cakes folks I know you all have them!!!

    PS its great with eggnog!

You are right about Collins Street Bakery being the best. We've been ordering gifts from them for about 40 years and have never been disappointed.

RonB trust me when I say the Collin Street Bakery fruitcake is like no fruitcake you or I have ever had. I never liked fruitcake, but this one is different with the about 1/3 of the cake being made of crushed pecans. I am sure that is the reason they are so expensive. Look to pay $30.00 for a standard size cake which isn’t as large as some of the poor tasting ones I grew up with in New Orleans. So, I get your disbelief.

Fruitcakes as a gift are wonderful and money saving. Where I grew up, with few exceptions, fruitcakes were warmly received, thank you notes properly sent, and then tossed into a cabinet for regifting the follow Christmas. Saved a lot of people time and money not having to shop for those where not giving the very best was sufficient.

Donw Exactly the same experience I had growing up. Mom would even store some of them in the freezer. Admittedly they were cheap stuff. I don’t guess I’ve ever had an expensive one.

My wife got a Claxton Brick (Fruitcake) from p, supposedly, one of her best friends. My wife is a forgiving person.

I love a good fruitcake. Here in NC there is a fruitcake bakery (Southern Supreme Fruitcake and More) that makes as close to homemade as is gets. Several varieties to choose from and the fruit cake cookie are amazing. My wife also makes a wonderful, homemade fruitcake.
Ya either have a really good one or not.

Not a fruitcake fan. Don't like mincemeat pie either.

My Dad loved both so we always had them around the holidays.

We also have the mincemeat tradition. I never could bring myself to like it. In fact, last night, my sister -- who is a French-trained chef and teaches pastry at a culinary school -- made the mincemeat pie, so that was the height that that dish could get.

While objectively, it was very good, I am just not a fan of those flavors. Give me pumpkin!

By now it is becoming clear that all fruitcakes are not created equal, and most of them are hated and don’t measure up category. But, if seems there are some exceptions to hated fruitcake.

There truly are! Growing up I wasn’t the biggest fan of my grandmothers fruitcake. It was a bit strong for a young man as she used just bourbon instead of the rum and brandy so many use. I however grew to enjoy it. Once she passed we were told about Collins Street Bakery and we haven’t looked back.
We always send them to our extended family for gifts and I buy 3 or 4 to start to soak for the rest of the year. The oldest will be served at Thanksgiving and will be so strong you’ll want a mixer!

MY BIL makes Fruitcake for us each year. His is pretty good but we don't need another one. Lots of Family history goes along with his so that makes John's better than most.
