Kobe beef, in Kobe, Hyogo Japan. It's definitely worth doing once if the opportunity presents. When I am at home, I am cutting up chuck rolls to get cheap steaks and leaning into the holiday rib roast sales
Certain rare circumstances, yes. Vast majority, hell no.
note: just paid under $98 for 20.45LBS of Angus rib roast. 99/100 days, I would chose the whole rib roast for $98 over the $150/lb wagyu.
Man I wanna know what steaks you are getting for less than $12/lb! Maybe I can grab a flank on sale for that price. But I have a hard time finding anything below $15/lb.
As for your question, I have on occasion bought very expensive steaks, not $150/lb but def over $40-50 per lb. In my mind it is (and was) worth it but def not an every day steak.
If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
I’m a hard nope on that much for meat. Right now I’m with gboss on buying chuck rolls and prime rib on the cheap right now, and filling my freezer with affordable and quality steaks.
I just carved up a 18 pound ribeye roast aka prime rib aka standing rib roast into a dozen 1.5 inch thick ribeyes that ranged from .75 pounds to 1.5 pounds each, along with a slab of beef back ribs for smoking. I was going to separate the ribeye cap, but got lazy and didn’t. Cost - $5.79 a pound for USDA choice at Publix, through 12/24. All into the deep freeze for feeding me and SWMBO.

Here's some examples of what we pay on a regular basis. This is one of my local stores ad from this week. Nothing over $12/lb.
On a routine basis I'd never pay $50/lb or some such. But I'm not gonna rule it out either. When the moment is right, when the occasion calls for it and nothing else will do but something completely over the top, you bet. Those right moments would involve doing something really nice for someone I love dearly, and creating wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. That's worth some money to me.
WayneT your dining experience sounds awesome! We have a bit of a “ Dinner Club” we are a part of. 4-5 couples that get together every couple of months in nice-very nice restaurants to enjoy fine meals.
Last year my wife turned the big 60 so I put together a dinner party at her favorite restaurant. They have a fabulous private dinning room with an amazing table for 20. Private bar, two dedicated servers and sommelier…Absolutely amazing experience.
Chef called me a week before to discuss the menu and wine pairings, was surreal to have his complete and undivided attention. I’m guessing it was a once in a lifetime experience for us and probably most at the table. I won’t say what I spent but I promise it was more then $150 a pound!
