About once a year I do something like that. Sometimes I do little test touches to see how hot something is and if I feel I can handle it then I commit and grab it only to find out no, in fact, I cannot handle it.

Been there, done that, many many times! I remember one time I used a pot holder to grab a cast iron skillet and carry it from the grill to the house, and didn't make it. A regular pot holder is fine moving something from the oven or stove to the counter. It's not meant for a 50-70 foot walk. The heat works its way through the potholder about halfway through the walk!
As a kid in the 70's I was leaning against the counter while my mom was cooking and managed to catch the sleeve of my polyester shirt on fire (gas cooktop). I ended up with a 2nd degree burn about 2-3 inches across on my bicep, with polyester melted into the skin. Took quite some time to heal, and there is still a small scar there 40+ years later. I am pretty aware of the stove burners even today!

Pro tip…Right after a long motorcycle ride with your girlfriend in the 90’s, the pipes are still screaming hot. It’s not a good idea to close the garage door and attempt naked drunken sex on the motorcycle.Last edited by Panhead John; June 1, 2022, 01:05 PM.

Quick update.....pain is essentially gone, except for some very mild soreness. Redness is gone, too. I thought this would linger far longer given what I did and how bad it hurt.
Can't believe I did that lol....wow.....

I have so many stories, don't know where to start. So!
Camping for the weekend, making dinner on the fire with a Coleman camp stove as wingman. Boiling cob corn in a tall pot ( why I didn't just put the corn in tin foil with a little butter and spices and throw it in the fire I'll never know) Corn was ready, pot handles were oriented at an 4 and 10 clock position, touched the outside handle and it was only warm, grabbed the front handle, reached over the top and grabbed the back handle with authority and lifted the heavy pot for about 2.6 seconds and dropped it right back onto the stove and started questioning my intelligence and where the stupid in my lineage came from, all in a explitive laced rant.....
End result, dinner was good, pain wasn't lessening, so a trip to a hospital to get my mid 2nd degree burns from the edge of my palm and all 4 fingers looked at and dressed followed by heavy self medication for the evening. 3 weeks to heal reasonably completely and surprisingly no scarring.
An object lesson was my 4 year old son was obsessed with the stove whenever we were cooking. He would go for the stove and Mom would freak out and keep him away. One day, no mom and making a meal he went for the stove. I just smiled and watched the action. Result - minor small burn and absolute respect for the oven when cooking from that day on...

Current line-up of cookers: Oklahoma Joe's Bronco Pro, Masterbuilt Gravity Series 1050, Blackstone ProSeries 4 Burner 36" griddle, Weber Performer Deluxe and Weber Smokey Joe.
I had a close call last Saturday while firing up my Bronco Pro. I have one of those Char-Griller chimney lighters with the quick release bottom that swings out to dump the coals. I had wisely put a welding glove on my right hand to prevent all the embers from burning my forearm, but immediately after dumping I absent-mindedly used my left hand (with only a nitrile glove) to push the bottom of the chimney lighter back up into place. The really dumb part was it took me a second to realize why the fingers on my left hand were getting so hot.
