Remember that time when you burned your hand on the stove when you were five?

Yeah, I remember that time, too. Unfortunately, four decades later, that lesson does not seem to have stuck!

So when I took my cornbread out of the pellet grill inside to put the filling in, I used an oven mitt as I was taking freaking cast iron out of a 375 F grill.

I put the filling in, but was nonplused with the sauce seemed to pool up on one side the skillet. So I reached down and grabbed the handle to tilt the skillet to allow the sauce to flow. Yes, I reached down and grabbed, tightly, with my bare hand, a skillet that less than two minutes before had been at 375 F.

    OUCH.

Wow that hurt (and still hurts 90 minutes later). It's a mild first-degree burn, but wow. Thankfully it is on my right hand, which is not my dominate hand. I am also gripping an ice pack ever few minutes which helps. (Keeping my hand in a neutral position helps as well, which means I am typing this one handed. I think I am pretty good at it!)

Wow I feel stupid. I can't believe I did that.

We've all been there. I try to leave a hot pad more or less in place to remind me on hot things. But in the case of cast iron, there are silicon sleeves available for just about any imaginable skillet size.

i do this as well, hot pad or towel on the handle of any hot cast iron or edge of baking sheet as a reminder, too many times I've gotten distracted and grabbed a hot one and been burned.

I've never done anything that dumb in the last five minutes.

Oh man. I want to see some pics.
    Don’t think it happened. 😁
Seriously though. Those things hurt like a MFer.
    Feel better my friend.

I once grabbed the exhaust pipe of a running motorcycle, right where it came out of the engine. No, I will never forget that.

I did similar with the twin exhaust pipes from a VW bug--I was SO PROUD of the new muffler I had installed...

      Yup.
My mother told me my hand was a mess for months....
Then there was the time I lost my balance next to a wood burning stove and grabbed the chimney pipe to save myself....alcohol may have been involved....my hand was a mess for months....

I try to be very good about leaving a pot holder draped over hot handles. I do this because I have felt your exact pain. More than once. Okay, more than five times.

I now have some leather and some cloth skillet handle covers that I use just for this very reason - too many times of being in a hurry and grabbing a skillet handle. Thankfully no bad burns, just some cussing. Once the skillet is removed from the smoker, I leave the handle cover on until it cools. When using a skillet on the stove I just leave the handle cover on all the time.

I hope you feel better. Yes I still do it all the time. Most commonly I take something out of the over or BBQ with the gloves and then, like you, I forget to put them back on.

If it gets bad by tomorrow don't hesitate to see a doctor.

Thanks all. The redness has vanished and as long as I do not stretch my hand, I am not longer feeling any overt pain. I am sure I will have some blistering in my palm and right where my palm meets my fingers.

Thankfully most of my work tomorrow can be accomplished with the mouse in my left hand! (I've already written my colleagues.....just call me tomorrow....I ain't -- said in full East Texas Drawl -- typing with both hands unless I have to!)

Will update tomorrow. (BTW, the Brisket Tamale Pie was worth it!)

I once grabbed the handle of a hot cast iron skillet. I didn't know it was hot. My wife had preheated the oven with the skillet inside and decided to just put it on top of the range without telling me.

Thankfully, a friend of mine who is a pharmacist turned me on to Foille cream. Never be without it.

Gripping a cold beer with your injured hand may help. Drinking the beer will help more.

You are clearly a learned physician. I don't even have a burned hand but can see that this would benefit me as well. It's 5 o'clock somewhere.

I picked up a glass Pyrex baking dish off of the oven rack with my bare hands one time. Dropped it right back on the rack, but damn...

Yes, I was about 5 and ready for a biscuit. Mama had went to get something, so I grabbed the pan out of the oven. I carry the scar on my palm . I remember getting down on the floor and going round and round. Lesson learned ...for a while at least.

I still remember looking down at my hand and seeing the blisters in the exact shape of the burner.
The blisters were huge had to be 1/2" high, broke a couple open right off the bat which just made things a whole lot worse.
Things did not improve much in the stove pipe episode.
