Paprika Recipe Manager: Do you use nested categories?

I'm curious about how others organize their recipes in Paprika. Do you have categories nested within categories?

Like most things tech, mines a mess and I use search to find the recipe I want. My email is the same.

So... that means you don't nest and just have a list that you search?

I do try to categorize things, but just use mostly the defaults. Plus my wife adds things too and doesn’t always categorize or do it the same way I would. So I never scroll through a category looking, I just search.

I have created categories that organize things the according to meal or meal item. One of my goals is limit Paprika to what I cook regularly or what I want try cooking. I am trying to avoid gathering recipes I never us like I used to when I clipped paper ones. With the Paprika search engine If there is something I want to cook I can search the web, import the recipe and try it.

I started out thinking I would limit it to only recipes I use but it is so easy to organize I have almost 400 in my folders. You can "Pin" frequently used recipes or you can rate them then sort by rating when you are in the "All Recipes" folder. Puts all your frequent flyers right at the top.

I've been using Paprika for several years now and I only recently finally categorized all my recipes. But sadly no, I have not done further and create sub-menus. That almost seems too organized! 🤣

I'm like glitchy and my recipes and email are a huge mess! I normally just do a search for what I'm wanting. I try to organize, then something comes up and I get behind, then I just let it go.

Ha…email….that is just one giant inbox for me. That is where the search function is amazing

I ask because one school of thought is that if everything is categorized at the top level you can just use search to find what you want. The argument for nested categories is that you can browse instead of search. Maybe that's not really worth it?

Search works in nested folders as well. You can search "All Recipes" and it will pull from all your folders.

I was starting to name recipes like "Bread, white sandwich" rather than "White sandwich bread" but realized I could create a subcategory "Bread" within the main category of "Breads, Muffins, Tortillas, Pizza". I also do searches. Both features are useful.

I wish Paprika would let a person change the category without having to edit each recipe. Ditto for changing the ratings for recipes. Zero stars = new, want to try. 3 stars = tried but needs work. 5 stars = tested, refined, loved.

I only recently started using Paprika. I have created some nested categories and need to make more.I don't yet have enugh recipes for it to be a mess, but it could easily turn that way if I am not careful.

I only have main categories and haven’t nested as you show above. I don’t know that I have enough content there to do that, but just last night, it was something that I started to think about in regards to sauces and should I expand that to particular food sauces and such……

As I continue to add, it’s a good way to keep things a bit more organized to be able to scroll through.

I do. Maybe not to the extent you show, but I do use nested categories. For example, I have a category called Entrees and nested under that I have sub categories for various protein types. I may have 1 or two ethnic categories, but that's the extent of it.

I started using Paprika about a month ago and only have 91 recopies in 27 categories. I am not nesting categories within others and most likely won't. I like a simplified list and have found Paprika's search engine to be spot on. Maybe one day when my recipe count grows I will reconsider.

I have not nested my categories yet, and not sure I was aware that was an option. Not sure I will - most recipes I tag in multiple categories, like "Main Dish" and "Lunch or Dinner" and "Pork" for example. I use the category dropdown to filter to the recipes I am looking for, like "Bread" or "Beverage" or such.

I tag recipes for categories. So KC BBQ Sauce is tagged for both "BBQ" and "Sauces". Boeuf Bourguignon is in "French" and "Beef" and "Dinner". Stuff like that.

This is exactly what I do.

tags and categories here. some minor nesting, such as DESSERTS > CAKES, DESSERTS > COOKIES, DESSERTS > PIES to make some semblance of order.

I nest mine, and find it to be one of the features that I like best.

Tried it. Not worth the trouble to me. I tag with multiple categories sometimes, but even with 3400+ recipes search is just too fast to mess with nested categories.
