per the web, Hawaii consumes the most Spam per state at 7 million cans per year. That averages to about 5 cans per person per year.

I can't really remember eating it but growing up in the 1950's, I'm sure I had it sometime.

    I do remember eating

This was lunch often, even in my Mom packed grade school lunch bag.

🎶 Spam Spam Spam Spam 🎶 Spam Spam Spam Spam 🎶 Spam! Wonderful Spam! 🎶

I love the stuff. Mostly in breakfast concoctions. It goes great with eggs and cheddar cheese. I buy it in the Costco size package. 8 cans per. Yum.

When we were kids, my dad used to make us a dish called Alfredo de la SPAM!! It was just fried spam and noodles with cheap Alfredo sauce. But we loved it and devoured it, especially after those cold hockey practices outside.

For his 70th birthday, we had the chef’s make up a huge batch for us at dinner. The chefs were laughing, and then they made it and tried it and said they might add it to the menu!! (Doubtful) It was awesome! It was a great throwback. And my old man was so pumped.

I have Musubi rice bowl at least once a week. Rice, SPAM (Korean gochujang, Korean BBQ, or Tocino SPAM) with some seaweed, scallions and a nice runny fried egg on top. Finished off which just a bit of sriracha/ketchup mixture.

Good video, thanks for posting. One thing that was not elaborated upon was the food safety factor. Lunch meats and other precooked, non-frozen types of meat products become exposed to bacteria during further processing prior to packaging, and after that, whatever conditions they are exposed to during transport and storage are unknown by the consumer. Reports abound of food borne illness from this, Boar’s Head had a big one a year or two ago. I rarely eat lunch meat any more because of it, pretty much only when away from home out of necessity. Once that Spam can is filled, vacuum packed, and cooked in a retort there are zero surviving bacteria and it will remain that way until opened on my countertop. I kinda like that.

Our local market features Boar's Head lunch meats. They slice the meats and cheeses in-house, place in a "Boar's Head" zipper pouch, then into a standalone "Boar's Head" refrigerated case. The expiry dates are in the 3 - 5 window after purchase. It seems like an elegant, cost effective way to avoid a lot of the contamination you noted.

I like it so much, I started making my own. Not sure now where I got the recipe from, but it was tasty and I eased up on the salt.

I made it for my father in law years ago. He and I had a lot of it to eat as no one else would try it.

We had it infrequently growing up.

Once in a while, the local Kroger will have it on sale, which means it's about the price it should be. When bacon's too expensive, or breakfast sausages aren't on sale, I'll pick up a can or two.

Probably once or twice a year, I'll slice it, fry it, and serve it with eggs in the morning, and the leftovers become a sandwich. On white bread with mustard (of course!).

        It's a little bit nostalgic.

HEB has their "chopped ham" version....may have to do a side by side taste test.

Edit: Maybe not after watching the video...HEB version has 9 ingredients.

I do have a few (?) cans of Spam in my emergency food preps. I figure if we get to the point of opening Spam my wife won't turn up her nose at the protein. Everytime we're in Costco and walk past the Spam I ask if we should pick up a case and she emphatically says no.

I love Spam! Love it, love it, love it! I didn't realize that they sold it in anything but the rectangular pull-top cans. I must get one!
              Thanks for sharing!

Spam and Vienna sausages were me and my mom's fishing meals. With saltine crackers and budweiser. And it had to be bud; my mom wouldn't drink any other beer. Every once in awhile I pick up a can. I still take Vienna sausages with me when I fish.

Bud has been my beer of choice since way back when. It does not stress my digestive tract and it is not a headache producer if I occasionally overindulge.

Alan Brice that is funny. We used to call Bud headache because is inevitably gave us headaches lol

Oh yeah! Nothing wrong with a bit of spam. I almost always add it to my fry ups. :-)

On another note…several years ago a few of us were sitting around and food became topic. My friend’s wife was more than slightly gullible. I told her that SPAM was actually an acronym…and it was actually Solid Packed Aardvark Meat.
                Hook, line, and sinker! LOL

I was getting ready to grill some Spam for sandwiches when my wife says "I have an idea!" She decides to bake some breaded shrimp, the little baby ones. So we have these great sammies-grilled Spam, slice of sharp cheddar, and breaded shrimp. Minnesota surf and turf baby!
