Growing up in Spamtown USA, my dad retired from Hormel after 42 years, my grandfather was a body guard - chauffeur for one of the Hormel sons. I have one of the Hormel family Cribbage boards in our house.

I love spam, and definitely grew up around it. I’ve eaten so much of it in the duck blind, or fishing boat in sandwiches. We always got to try the sample cans of new recipes before they would be labeled. Some were made only for certain countries, like Guam got their own at one time. It was incredibly hot.

My Dad loved Spam. He would fry it and put it on a sandwich.

It was special for him. When he was in German POW camp in WW II , the Red Cross Parcels would contain a can of Spam. They were being fed a bowl of cabbage soup daily, along with a piece of bread that tasted like it had sawdust for a filler. So even having to share the Spam with several others, it was a real treat.

I view it very similar in nature to hot dogs or bologna. Yeah, I like it. I don't partake every day or even every month, but it's tasty.

The first time I saw that was in Hawaii… Wasn’t quite sure about that…but as I’m not really one to shy away from food…I gave it a go. Glad I did.

Hawaii was my introduction. I traveled there on business for a number of years, many years ago, and it was served at most golf courses. It remember liking it a lot. This was back when I could expense it. Greens Fees in Hawaii weren't cheap.

We always have at least 1 Costco size package of it in the pantry. Great for sandwiches and a rotating armageddon stockpile.

Years ago, high school, late 60's. Did an overnite at a buddy's house. Next day, my folks asked what we had for supper last nite. They were horrified to hear Spam. I had never had it, thought it was fine. Only later, in college dorm, did I learn that I was very privileged. Mom served steak at lunch (quick to cook), roast at nite. When Dad was gone, we got a special treat, grilled cheese.

Daddy used to make us spam and eggs for a treat some weekends. Toasted butternut bread. Great memories. Now, I’ll get a musubi every now and again.

Dads. They seem to be the Spam bringers. Mine did. Did anyone’s mom introduce them to Spam?

Yeah, original SPAM is too salty for my tastes, but the low sodium version is pretty good.

Memory of Spam! Boy Scout camping trip kid unpacked his backpack and him mom packed a can of Spam for his dinner. He threw that as far as he could with many choice words. We all donated portions of our dinner to him. That can may still be there.
