Troutman Great pics, I’ve been to lots of places like that, but probably this one most often. I love them all.

Don't get me started on Italian Beef or Sausages. I FINALLY found I guy here in Houston who is from Detroit and he opened a sandwich shop and has real deal Italian Sausage and Beef. He even asks which type of dipping you want (full for me of course). It was like music to my ears and deliciousness to my mouth. Guy makes a pretty mean Detroit style pie as well !! These are things I miss about the Midwest.

I keep telling the wife that we should move down south, but I don’t know what I’d do without my weekly combo, hot dog, and pizza, other than lose some weight…

Well, since it was asked. Son lives in Chicago. I had a Chicago hot dog and wasn’t impressed. Poor interpretation of the hot dog.

Mustard and sour kraut on a potato roll, mmmm. Chili, cheese, and onion, mmmm. A ripper from Rutts Hut in Clifton, mmmm.

The best hot dog, an Italian hot dog, Dickie Dee’s in Newark does it great. It’s a Jersey thing. Pizza bread, mustard, deep fried hot dogs (2), peppers and onions, deep fried potatoes, ketchup. DELICIOUS! Check it out, watch it being made. https://vimeo.com/141374029

Damn those do look good! The bread, deep frying and the peppers and onions really grabbed me.

Not for me. I don't do pickles of any sorts.

@scottranda. I know why you didn't love that Chicago dog, if it's the one you from your photo. Those peppers are wrong!! (Excuse the shouting.). You must have the Vienna Sport Peppers. Then it's the perfect hot dog.

Amirite? SheilaAnn Potkettleblack Troutman Sid P (btw, my uncle Sidney, my dad's brother, was Sidney Pepper. You aren't his re-incarnation by any chance?) Murdy STEbbq (And the rest of you Chicago Red Hot lovers, who I have neglected to tag. You know who you are.) Oops, I forgot Meathead ! I assume he has an opinion on Chicago Hot Dogs.

Potkettleblack You know it baby !!! My Great Aunt was an executive at Vienna, we always got huge boxes of wieners, sausages, etc. from her. Probably why I have too much plaque in my arteries !!!!

Troutman Nah, not to worry. It's a true fact that the sport peppers and celery salt dissolve the plaque. Something, something... about natural nitrites. And, the radioactive relish is better than a vaccination for increasing testicular size. You're all good. Again, trust me, I'm a doctor.

BTW, two of my Vienna Hot Giardiniera bottles had leaked oil, from under the caps. You can see the lower oil level in the bottle 2nd from the left.

I sent Vienna an email with the attached photo, and my order number and an explanation. They responded in 5 minutes! They will send me two replacements. Great service!!

I enjoy the fact that each state, and if you're lucky multiple parts of each one, all do things slightly different. I love even more when they go WAY different.

I don't prefer hot dogs Chicago style, and I'm not a huge fan of deep dish pizza or tomato pie. I'll eat all of those things when I'm in the area though. Worst case they aren't your thing and you'll appreciate your local way more. Best case you like them and find a way to meld them to your local cuisine and make something "new"

            Sorry. NOT with you!

I've spent my life in the South, but have been to Chicago-land a few times, and a Chicago dog is by far my favorite take on the noble hotdog. I used to get my fix for them at the Sonic 1/4 mile from my neighborhood, but then Sonic took it off the menu. I can't get Sport Peppers here, so haven't had a Chicago dog fix in years...

Dr. Pepper thanks for the link - I've got it bookmarked, and at some point I may just order that and possibly some Vienna beef dogs as well, just to see what all the hype is about. Think I can make a respectable "Chicago dog" with Nathan's and just those condiments?

jfmorris Yes, of course you can! Use a real kosher dill pickle, such as Clausens, or the current ones in the refrigerator section at Costco. No non-refrigerated grocery shelf pickles. We warm the wieners in hot water, and steam the buns. Have fun.

Y’all know me…. Ketchup is the devil’s work. Honestly, when I do get a C-Dog, it is only from Portillo’s (yes, they have on here in Southern California). And I take off the pickle and eat it on the side. And I squirt the sport pepper juice all over the hot dog and BF eats the remains of the sport peppers.

This is where my grandparents/dad/sister would always get hot dogs. Two dogs in the bottom of a brown paper sack. Filled to the top with fries.

Those photos bring back memories. The brick work, one story buildings; post Great War architecture. I think the midwest big cities are full of streets that look like this. The opening credits for The Sopranos, in New Jersey, resembled Broadview, Maywood, Westchester on Roosevelt Rd in the Chicago western near suburbs.

Yeah, cat soup by its self is of very limited value in our house. I've been adding Duke's Alabama White Sauce to my twice-a-year mayo order and we really like that with french fries. Or, on just about anything that someone would ruin with cat soup.

Now to be fair….. when I go to Wrigley West and have a dodger dog, it is with mustard and onions. Delicious! And when I ge to a certain farmer’s market, I get one of those bacon wrapped hot dogs cooked on a plancha with blistered jalapeños. Also a treat! Mustard only, thank you very much.

Looks really good. I'm not opposed to other iterations of the hot dog. I probably order a chili dog with cheese and onions almost as often as I order Chicago dog.

When I was in Junior High, (roughly 1978-79) I went to San Diego for the whole summer to spend time with my Sicilian Grandmother. She had a beautiful thick Strong New York-Sicilian Accent...

It was my first time on a plane and anywhere farther away than Wisconsin . At some point during my visit, we ended up at a hot dog stand of some sorts. It was my turn to order, I said, "I'll have one with everything." They said," You mean you want ketchup, mustard and jalapeño's?" I said, "What's a jalapeño?" My Sicilian Grandmother was belly laughing.

Being from the Chicago area, I thought everyone almost everywhere ate hot dogs Chicago style. I didn't know there was any other style. I was embarrassed at first...I ate the so called hot dog because I was hungry.

I remember the next day saying, "I'll cook!" We went to the grocery store and I picked out the closest ingredients as possible and made Chicago Dogs and Baked frozen French Fries for my Grandmother and her friends. It was hard to find the Sport Peppers but my Grand mother found some from an Italian Deli somewhere in San Diego.

I remember we ran out and someone went to the store to get more dogs. This was one of my first times cooking for a group at maybe 13....So much fun!
