I got some hotdogs from a local butcher on Friday... they're prepackaged, but all beef and large sized, about 5 per pound. Now, they have some they sell "bulk" which are just loose dogs frozen in a plastic bag inside a cardboard box. Those dogs are 'pretty good'. I like 'em alright. But the news are listed as "All Beef Hotdogs" so I thought I'd give 'em a try, they're also a bit more expensive.
I got these new ones for a get together yesterday up at a friend's cabin in the woods. This was for a Manhood Ceremony for my 16 y/o son.
I actually didn't eat any of the hot dogs at the cabin, I did burgers, brats, chipotle brats and hot dogs, all on my friend's kettle. I ended up eating a chipotle brat and a burger (and some of my wife's AMAZING beans). But when I came home, The Wife and I were watching a show and I decided to heat up some of the leftovers. I ate one of the regular brats (which I liked very well) and took one of the hot dots and put ketchup and mustard on it (my standard).
I took ONE BITE and nearly spit it out! WTH????
This thing tasted just like a damned SLIM JIM! I was shocked and utterly disgusted. Now, I've eaten Slim Jims before and knowing what you're getting and what to expect, you don't have high expectations - I don't think I've eaten one in many years, but... this hot dog tasted JUST like a Slim Jim. UGH!
So I've looked them up on their website and these are from Fanestil Meats, in Emporia, KS. They are 4 dogs to a package, 12oz, so 3 oz per dog. From what I find, I think these are the ones I've gotten -
So I don't know... I have 2 more packages unopened, I may try some again today. I'll probably boil a couple to remove any possible contamination from the fire issues and see if they're any better. Maybe it was a... fluke. I dunno. They look like good dogs, but they do have "Smoke Flavor Added" notation on the label, which could be where the off-putting taste is coming from. They were cooked on a Weber kettle with Kingsford charcoal - some kinda reddish-brown looking color on the bag, not the just normal blue. I think maybe they were "smoke" flavored briquettes? Looking it up, maybe it was their 'hardwood' version, I dunno. No lighter fluid used, just a chimney with newspaper to get it started. But I can attest the burgers and brats didn't have any off-putting flavors, so who knows.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it - but dangit if I don't want a top-notch GOOD hotdog once in a while, and everyone aound here recommends Nathan's and I just don't find them to be worth anything.
I'll try to report back if today they taste different. Maybe it was a weird one-off - The Wife ate hers and said she didn't notice anything off about it. Maybe I'm just weird. She will tell you yes, that is most likely the problem.

It’s because you put ketchup on it… JK (not really)🤣
Seriously, IMHO I notice when you do get an "all-beef" dog (think mainstream Nathan’s), it will not be as tender, etc as a dog made with a little bit of pork, too. But, wow, slim Jim, huh? That to me just screams tough and salty. Hopefully, you didn’t spend too much money.
Because of where I grew up, Vienna Hot Dogs are my favorite. But I am always open to try new products.

So I tried again just now. Microwaved a pair of them - cut off an end and tried it, did not like the flavor. It was not as pronounced as the one last night (not grilled, fresh, not heated, chilled and reheated, etc.), but overall, I just threw them all in the trash. I think I paid $5 a pack or something, but it's money wasted, so... oh well.
Still on the hunt for the best dogs. I really am gonna have to order online. <sigh>

Please, do keep me informed as to yer Dog Search, Brother!
I have tried many th most advertised, popular, famous, rejoiced dogs, an was not only disappointed, but Greatly Underwhelmed...
Lemme add that I am a Salt kinda guy...I enjoy salt...my Doc sez I should eat more salt...low average BP...
I salt even my bacon...
Strivin to reach a higher level, been buyin many top name brand dogs, vs th lower shelf ones I was / am raised on...
Many, thus far, have been so double dang danged salty as to be entirely unpalatable / inedible, to my tastes...
Multiple packages have been systematically dispersed into th yard, fer my diurnal friends...
Went back to th cheapomatics, (Bar S), almost always ¢99, an was Way More Pleased...
Help me find an edible dog, please

Sammy, those dogs look interesting, how did they taste? And what was the casing like? It's hard to tell from a picture, I know, but those somehow look to me like they might have a pretty strong casing. I like a mild snap, but don't want to have to "chew off a bite" as I've had to with some sausages and hot links and such.

If you learn to make your own hot dogs, it's real difficult to buy commercial ones. Totally different from what is usually sold. I made a bunch of hot dogs for a" Family Meal" at work some time ago. This is where any interested parties, at the restaurant pitches in a couple bucks, then we use a bit of the restaurants stuff(with their blessing, natch), and make a nice bunch of food for the crew. Instead of the usual skinny and small commercial hot dogs, I made them the size of brats. They killed.I hadn't had dogs like that since I was a kid in the 60's. The homemade buns helped a bit...lol
