    Duke’s changed my life

For years I’ve read about Dukes mayo - many a loyal fan here in The Pit. Being a Southern California native I’d never been able to experience it.

    …until last week!

I walked down the condiment aisle of a local grocery to pick up a bottle of Frank’s red hot - my typical base for buffalo sauce - and spied Dukes mayo.

What?!? Do my eyes deceive me?!?

I quickly grabbed a bottle and headed home to make a sandwich. It was head and shoulders above Best Foods - which is typically the only brand available around here other than “brown label.”

For the last week I’ve been putting it on everything. Sandwiches, burgers, fries…just squeezing it into my mouth.

I’m in love. Already killed a bottle, so picked up two more yesterday. Also, never buying Best Foods again.

Thank you to all who’ve recommended Duke’s here over the years.

My mother raised me to be a Helmann’s boy, and by golly that’s all I’ve ever really had and liked aside from a quick miracle whip phase. Even after joining here and hearing everybody rave about Dukes I never tried it, even after the WI Badgers won the prestigious Dukes mayo bowl a few years back.😂
Eventually I tried it and I don’t foresee myself using anything but Dukes anymore. The only chance I think I have doing anything different is if I made my own.

At the risk of ostracization, I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about. We tried a jar not long ago and I honestly couldn't tell much difference from the Best Foods/Helmann's we usually get (we get the light version, and here on the east coast it's Helmann's). I'll show myself out...

I know Helmann's & BF are the same. I was saying I can't tell much difference between that (which is Helmann's out here in Virginia but would be Best Foods out west) and the Duke's. Not between Best Foods and Helmann's.

If you can't tell a difference in flavor between those 2 side by side, I think your taster is broken! Duke's has a distinctive flavor that is different than Helmann's. I like Duke's but tend to eat whatever the wife buys and puts in the pantry...

jfmorris Jim, to be fair, I have not done a side by side. We just tried a jar when we saw it on the shelf, and used it as usual, and I don't remember anything standing out as being much different. Probably our biggest use of mayo is in making sandwiches...

Dukes and kewpie mayo are best. Blue plate or hellmans are runner up.

I don't love Kewpie on sandwiches or anything but it is amazing for dips, sauces, and the like. Mixing Kewpie and ssamjang for any sort of Asian/soy/teriyaki flavor meat is insane, especially for something like bulgogi tacos.

I've been a Dukes fan too. I was a Hellman's user. If you look at the ingredients The Dukes has cider vinegar and paprika and no sugar or lemon juice. IMO there is a difference in taste and I prefer Dukes. And anyone who tries to put Miracle Whip on anything I'm intended to eat, it will be thrown out.

Totally agree on Miracle Whip. Don't even open the dang jar.

And Miracle Whip can’t even call itself mayonnaise by federal regulations. Officially it is a “Salad Dressing.”

That show changed my life too. I have fond memories of watching it as a child…but my mom always made me turn off the TV when it was over, because Dallas was on next….and that “wasn’t for kids.”

I've never seen it here, but if I ever do I'll definitely give it a try. It's been discussed quite a bit here.

That looked really high in price but it did include shipping, still too much. I'll keep looking.

I always used Helmans until I found Dukes. Will never go back.

Another convert here as well. Was a Hellman’s fan for years. Dukes is it for me as well.

I like Duke's and Blue Plate, but TBH the differences between the different mayos are so small that I end up getting whatever is on sale.

Yeah, I like Dukes a little more but it’s not in regular grocery stores so I end up getting Hellmann’s more.

When I first moved from Maryland to SC and folks down here were using Duke’s, I didn’t care for it at first. Had a little different taste than what I was used to, guess the cider vinegar and paprika? But after making the switch, ain’t no going back to the farm after Paris nor using any other brand of mayo after Duke’s. That’s just the way it is.

I have never seen it. I used to do Hellman’s, but have found that Aldi’s store brand does the job just as well. As long as it’s not cool whip 🤢.
