considering a vast majority of poultry operations in N America culled over 50% of their operations chicken and even more so turkey is going to be very dear for the next few years. There were a lot of beef herds culled as well because of the droughts, but a lot of that is in freezers somewhere so it's gonna dip in price at some point and then hurt like heck for a year or three.
Yep. I’m thinking I’m going to start buying multiple whole chickens at a time and breaking them down into what I want. I’ll just have to start getting a little more creative in how to incorporate chicken stock into more dishes.
I almost did just that! Twice the meat 1/2 the price! If I had just been shopping for a craving I was having it’s exactly what I would have done. When my Mrs, who normally is good with whatever I plan and cook, asks for something specific she gets it! Happy wife….
I paid $1.00/lb more than that at the local farmers market on Friday for "buffalo cut" wings..
bought a little over 5 lbs worth. Will stretch that into 3 meals for 3 of us...

Meat prices are out of control across the board. Everything at our regular butcher is $2-$3/lb higher than a year ago. That market has a deli with Boars Head products and they make great sandwiches. Their deli sandwiches have gone up $3. We shop for 3. A trip to Jewel (Albertsons) is $100 without meat or alcohol.
I agree! Wing prices are out of control. Last couple times I’ve been requested to make buffalo wings, I’ve bought regular chicken wings and cut them down and that’s still expensive. Never have I thought something like wings would be so expensive.
You know it’s funny because just yesterday a new wing place opened up at work. My guys went there for lunch and came back to the shop complaining about the prices. 15 bucks for a dozen wings and a drink. I actually said “ that’s insane I can make them for a third of that at home!”
Prices on wings and everything else really are all over the place here. No sense to any of it. Gotta watch the sale emails and flyers. Stock up when you see a good deal. If wings are more than $2.99/pound, (current Costco price here) I leave them in the store. They were $4.99 this week at the grocery while thighs were $1.29. We’re having thighs for a while…..
I cringe and cuss every time I go to the grocery store! I agree with everyone, prices are absurd for almost everything. At Kroger’s today, I also bought chicken wings, they happened to be on sale for “only” $3.49 lb. ….reg. $4.29 lb. I bought some Duke’s Mayonnaise today…..$6.29 for a jar of f…ing mayonnaise! If I hadn’t of had a $1.00 off coupon I’d have gone with a store brand or something else. A bag of Fritos Scoops is frickin” $5.00 at Kroger for a small 9.25 oz. size bag. That’s ridiculous! 🤬
These days if the cheaper store brands are even close to decent quality, that’s what I’m going with. Kroger’s regular and ridged store brand potato chips are pretty decent tasting, not bad at all. That’s what I’ve been buying lately, ain’t no way I’m paying Lay’s absurd prices.

Many times the only difference between a name brand and the store brand is the label and how much is spent on advertising. There are companies that specialize in selling store brands to lots of different stores, but with different labels/packaging. Not food related, but back in my hardware store days one of the store managers went to the Glidden factory. same paint went into the cans, then different labels were applied. Same when I went to pick up water heaters. Same heaters, different labels.
We pretty much only buy whole chickens right now, maybe some skinless breasts... but wings and other stuff is stupid expensive. Keep an eye on frozen wings, sometimes significantly cheaper than fresh and already precut sometimes!
Also my beer went from 14 bucks a 15 pack to 19 this week. I thought it was just the gas station gouging when my total was 20 bucks the other day, but at the grocery store today same deal
On a positive note, this is the perfect time meat wise to get creative. Buy WHATEVER is on sale and then come to the pit or elsewhere to figure out what to do with it. Also sometimes you'll get lucky, today I got 2 thick cut tbones for much less than a chuck roast, if they had more tbones I woulda stocked up the freezer.
Panhead John yeah I've taken a liking to the Bud Light 15 pack aluminum bottles, I could get them as cheap as 12 bucks sometimes, I could also cut back my drinking but um... nah
bbqLuv mine are 16oz, so that PBR is about 14.5 cents an ounce, and my budlight is actually cheaper than that at 12 cents an ounce, the Coors is about 14 cents... that's crazy I'm used to PBR being the cheapest name brand per ounce.

Jfrosty27 His shop does cater to a higher end clientele.
But to be fair most of their prices are more within a normal Price range for a good butcher shop. Still way more than a traditional supermarket, but moe better.
Wish I was in a point in life I could. I was raised with a “ kill list” waiting at breakfast most Saturday's. Be it chickens, rabbits, ducks, goats, hogs or cows.
The hogs, goats or cows went to the locker. The chickens, rabbits and ducks my brother and I processed and froze.
Hated it as a kid, long for it now.
I'm pretty sure inflation is at its highest rate since 1981. Which means no one has really encountered this since......wait for it....1981.
I don't worry too much about food prices. I hear bacon is off the charts, I bought a 2 pound pack last night and couldn't tell ya for a million dollareenies what that thing cost.
Now, I can tell you about what my next vehicle will cost.
****Edit, sorry, 3 pounds of bacon. Just saw the pack.
I was warned last month by the manager of 1701 BBQ that there was a big bird flu epidemic and turkeys will be scarce. They can't source breasts right now and it is one of their signature items. Chicken is also affected I guess.
Those at the recent Texas Meat Up can attest that Burnt Bean in Seguin was also without turkey. Fortunately I found a 24 lb turkey at the local store last month for $0.79/lb and it is now in the freezer. I've heard predictions that turkeys will be $5/lb by Thanksgiving. And to top it off my Thanksgiving plans changed: I'm flying to the D.C. area to visit family so my turkey will be cooked for Christmas I guess. But I will be deer hunting so hopefully more cheap meat for the freezer.

I *think* I've seen this on the Purdue roasters I get at Walmart to spatchcock during the week for myself and the inlaws. I was just telling my wife the other day that the weight said 6.3 lbs but it sure looked smaller than other birds I've gotten at the same weight.
