No effing clue. Which irritates my SO to no end. LOL
I’m one of the worst people in the world when it comes to grocery prices. Had to pay attention to all that stuff in my chef days, and now I pretty much don’t care. Well, to a point I suppose…

I've been paying $5.00 a dozen at a local small farm for a couple of years now. I like knowing that the chickens are eating their natural diet, and are truly free range. Supporting local works for me too.

Raise my own. We eat more quail eggs than chicken eggs. The price of feed is steadily climbing. Right now we have over 100 quail and I am getting ready to reduce that down and hatch some more. We give all our eggs to our family plus what we eat. Have not purchased eggs in a while now. But I can see that they are going up alot. With all of this bird flu scare going on the sky may be the limit. Wait and see.

Hot pickled quail eggs are the bees knees. My grandmother used to raise quail. Now her property actually has several coveys of bobwhites that are reproducing.

texastweeter yes we make pickled eggs often. These are not bobwhite, they are Cotournix quail. Raised in Japan and very domesticated. Would not survive in the wild but all in the same family and taste the same in my opinion.

I am not sure how much I pay. It is a lot though - maybe 6-7 for 18 large eggs. I buy Eggland's Best. Go some bad Walmart brand eggs several years ago so I left those alone.

I pretty much buy from FM only. Unless I’m baking and then I will go to WF for the consistency in sizes.
I disagree with “eggs are eggs”. They are not. Ask texastweeter I’ll bet my next paycheck his eggs will probably be the best you’ve ever had (same with anyone else lucky enough to have their own). You are controlling the environment and the what the hens eat. That matters if it matter to you. If you are cool with commodity eggs, that’s your choice.

that said, FM prices have ranged from $6-9 a dozen here in Southern CA. Probably even more at more bougie FMs. I can get them from my local health food store from a reputable source for $4.99. She is under pricing them, imho. But I’ll take it. In the grocery, I have notice $4-$8 depending on the marketing program being used. Now I’m getting cynical, and will step off the soap box. 🫶🏻🥚🍳

hey, when I said "eggs are eggs" i was talking about shell color only... when I said "country eggs" I meant that, growing up, that is what we called farm eggs - stronger flavor and more variation - many people I grew up with only want bland commercial eggs with standard bland taste

acorgihouse copy that!!!! Duh! Of course!

Actually (I may have asked this before) don’t the shells somewhat reflect the feather colors? I’ve heard both yes and no.

SheilaAnn I've always been told the color of the shell is from the chicken variety. So the Aurancana (something like that) breed has the blue/green shells, etc. Don't quote me, though. Never been much of a chicken whisperer, unless it was in a roasting pan

$6.79 for Lucern Cage Free at our local Albertsons. I went to Costco and got eggs when I saw the prices at Albertsons Christmas eve.

            Maul-mart brand $6.72.

Got some today for $4.28/doz at Winco just over the river in Washington today. Unfortunately they were mediums. Figured we needed some though and it was fairly decent price for around here.

Last month was first time I’ve had to buy eggs in 10 years as we have chickens, but we’re down to 3 and they’re not laying right now because it’s winter and I think a couple are just freeloaders now.

Typically we buy the 24 pack of free range eggs at Costco. I think they’re $7-something. Due to extra family over the holidays I had to pick up eggs this morning from the local Barons market (think a slightly lower scale WF). I was shocked that a dozen organic, free range eggs were only $3.99. Pretty sure they were $6-7/dozen the last time I bought them at the grocery store.

Probably the ONLY thing in CA that’s gone down in price in the last couple years!

My local Wally World they're $3.97/doz for large, $4.46/doz for extra large. So it's an extra 4 cents per egg for the larger size, which is what I usually buy.

Eggland's best is weird.... $4.90 for a dozen, but $5.12 for 18 large, the cheapest in the store. Weird. Even cheaper than buying the 5 dozen flat of Great Value eggs, which is only a half cent per egg cheaper than the 12.

Cage free, free range brown eggs at WalMart at $5.50 a dozen - so, about 40% higher than regular 'commodity' eggs. Not worth it to me.

I've tried home raised, free range, cage free, all kinds of whatever eggs. Never noticed anything different in flavor. Yes, yolk color can be different - but they still taste the same to me. Especially when I fry them and put S&P on them, or scramble them with cheese and top with hot sauce or ketchup. Or boiled and peeled, eaten cold with S&P.

Never tasted a difference. And I've eaten LOTS of them. My buddy gives them to me all the time, since he has chikkins and when I am working out at his shop I am there most days. He says the same thing - he doesn't notice a difference. And he eats a lot of eggs - he's a carnivore essentially, eggs, cheese, meat and butter. That's it.

But hey, whatever, I don't begrudge anyone their choices - anyone is free to buy whatever eggs they want, and pay extra for them. I'm not, though.

I buy the cheapest eggs as well, even if that means getting 3 dozen at a time; those last us a couple weeks. But I’ll look around for some free range farm fresh eggs. It’s worth blowing a few bucks to see if I can tell the difference.

The darker/lighter yolks actually taste different IF you are allowed to see the yolks before consumption. Blindfolded no one could tell a difference. Kenji conducted the test.

Neighbors used to keep chickens, gave us some (little!) eggs. The yolks stood up like jellybeans. But there was no flavor difference.
