I have recently reignited my love of omelettes, and we blasted through the last of our eggs so I went to the store yesterday. I purposely didn't even look at the egg prices at the main grocery store I went to, a mom & pop place. I stopped at Dollar General for the eggs, because they had always been the cheapest place to get eggs.
$6.95/dozen. Insane. I did a double take, I thought maybe the price tag on the cooler door was for something else. Eggs have always been $.99-1.99/doz.
What are your egg prices? And, if they're absurdly expensive does this affect you buying them, or do you buy them anyway because you gotta have 'em?
I get farm eggs at my co-op. Open flats of 20 eggs, $11 for white, $13 for brown. Yeah, I know, eggs are eggs, but I alternate buying white/brown so I know which are oldest in the fridge. Occ he has the blue/green ones (?Arauncana or something like that) but they apparently bring a better price at the farmer's markets. I take my own container in, so leave the cardboard flat for the farmer. I like what we called, as a kid, "country eggs", but I know lots of "country kids" that do not. So, I'm happy. Lot of the eggs, especially the brown ones, are double yolks. I know egg prices have become a political issue, but for heaven's sake, BIRD FLU is the issue. I like knowing where my eggs come from. So.
Don't know off the top of my head but they have definitely gone up. I think Colorado pass a no cage law, so that will help the price increases. Our neighbors property has a chicken coop, maybe I should pay a visit.
HEB store brand eggs are $3.97 a dozen for large. I always buy the cheapest eggs as well. I don’t need them fancy schmancy farm raised brown, blue or purple eggs. These taste just fine to me. Same price at my local Walmart. Extra large at Walmart are $4.47 a dozen.
