I don't even really like BBQ sauce on brisket.
Sauces for steak that I do enjoy, for variety's sake, not out of necessity:
Compound butter, blue cheese crusting, worcester, chimichurri, red wine reduction, sauteed mushrooms, grilled onions, truffle salt, steak sauce, bernaise... there are lots of ways to go before "settling" for either some BBQ sauce (assuming we're talking a KC style) or ketchup.
Ketchup on steak is both your choice and contemptible.
In general I have to say no to steak sauce on steaks. But I have had steaks cooked for me that I didn't say no when they asked me if I wanted some steak sauce. There is a reason why they had 3 kinds on the fridge door. But I do like A1, its very tasty to me, and well ...Shh don't tell But I have bought some cheep steaks before so I had an excuse to use it.
If you can get some, the best steak sauce I ever had was called Salsa Lizano, from Cost Rica. Lizano is the brand name for a line of sauces, but if you ask for Salsa Lizano in CR you'll get what is sometimes referred to as Salsa Inglesa. It's similar to A-1 but better. I use it sparingly, just as a flavor enhancer.
I answered "sometimes" to the poll, but I rarely actually use BBQ as a finishing glaze on steak, but I do often use Lea & Perrins steak sauce (not just plain Worchestershire sauce) as a "dipping sauce". For me, a big time thumbs-down to Heinz 57 and A1. I never use any sauce for lamb rib chops. Nowadays, our steaks are dry brined (pepper, too) done SV at 130°F, then slapped on a Weber gasser with screaming hot GrillGrates for 30-45 seconds per side.
PERFECTION!!! With or without the Wosrchestershire.

As Meathead mentions, "There are no rules in the kitchen or the bedroom." So if it works for you do it.
I never put BBQ sauce on my steak, not because I have been told not too but because I love that beefy flavor. I do add salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder. And ocassionally, I will also add butter, sautéed mushrooms, onions and garlic.
To me, sauces have their place, and it ain't on no steak-o-mine!
I wouldn't usually do that (well not BBQ sauce) but if I'm at a sponsored lunch and get a (oh say Applebee's) steak I'm gonna be pouring Steak sauce on that hunk of leather for sure! But Dont think your gonna get lynched! you do what every floats your boat! We may not agree with it but sure not gonna say your wrong!! Cause if you like it your not!

I'll have to try the butter / compound butter, I've always heard good things. I mostly donplain, but sometimes I use A1 or wuster.
Steve Vojtek I'm with you in used to eat hot dogs that way. Recently discovered hot chopped hoagie spread with spicy brown mustard. I likes what I likes
Salt & pepper and the occasional dab of roasted garlic compound butter, or some sauteed mushrooms for me. You bought it and you cooked it, sauce it any way you want. If I bought it and cooked it and you want sauce (or ketchup) on it, you better bring your own...
