I know many people call tri tip steak that which are slices off a whole BBQ'd tri tip,
but we have a restaurant near us that serves "tri tip steaks" that appear to be cut across the grain at the widest point and then cooked.
They are seared nicely- regular or reverse I can't tell. Has anyone done anything like this with tri tips? I'm ready to, but any input may save me the problem of ruining a tri tip. In fact, my mouth is watering thinking about it.

That's exactly what we call a tri-tip steak. Otherwise it's just a slice of a tri-tip roast.
