First time with a Chuckie & THIS cooker!

Yessir, I know this ‘taint no grill or smoker, but it is my first foyer into usin a Crock Pot. Had two of them & gave one away, bein I hadn’t used either fer 2+ years, wonderin if I ever would. Well, wonders never cease. I thought I’d give it a whirl. I know there isn’t much to settin it up, sorta like a Ron Popiel type journey. The recipe is a cross tween Husky’s Pork Butt, Italian Style Pot Roast & Sicilian Spicey Beef, a little bit of this & a little bit of that, a meal, a cook & that’s where it’s at. Half beef broth, half Maranara sauce, onions, plenty of garlic, New Mexican Pwdr & stuff. I will add some black beans the last 45 minutes. I just got home & currently halfway into the cook. Let ya’ll know how things turn out. Click image for larger version

What! Are u serious? 10-12 hours and tough!? Every roast I’ve done, 8 hours on low, falls apart when I pick it up out of the crockpot. I’ve never heard this in my life. You’re weird man……😉

It sounds like the temperature is low on the crock pot.

Yeah, it has to have been a faulty crockpot.

Nothing wrong with a crock pot. They are very handy. In fact we had a beef roast the other night made in one with celery and carrots slowly stewed. I prefer my mashed potatoes on the side, so I make those separate.

    Great job FireMan!

I think we have 2 of them. The only use they see is re-heating pulled pork and brisket for catering / parties. My wife keeps threatening to cook me something in one but so far it hasn’t happened ( I don’t let her cook much). Folks do swear b y them though, maybe someday.

By the way …Great new avatar!

Panhead John - I need to get one then, 'cause I'm very good at the forgetin' part.

My wife loves her slow cookers. I think we only have one actual Crock Pot brand, and it is 30 years old and looks just like the one you have, floral print, blue knob and porcelain and all. It's great for soups and stews that can sit and simmer all day, and also for beans and such. We've had many a chuck roast cooked in them with potatoes, onions and carrots.

I did one this way a couple of weeks ago. I posted it on SUWYC. Nothing wrong with this approach. And super easy. Mine turned out great. I’m sure yours will too! Yum.

I had 2 and the ex took both. So I just bought another one. I love the things.

jfmorris I have an instant pot. I forgot that it has a slow cook function -duh!!! I need to check it out and maybe donate the crock. Luckily I bought a relatively cheap one

My instant pot came with a separate slow cooker type glass lid. I use it for that mode, or if serving from the instant pot.

The thing I really didn't use until the past few months was the braise mode of the instant pot. It's awesome to be able to brown some meat or saute some onions before adding everything else to the pot to cook. No separate skillet on the stove required!

It's funny when we have appliances and only realize their full potential after using them for years, sometimes.

klflowers , I like the crock pot function on my Instant Pot so well that I only use my other crockpots if I want a much larger or much smaller capacity.

As jfmorris says, you can saute your meats and veggies on the Saute function before adding the liquids, deglazing, and setting to slow cook. Great for making chili that way if you want it to cook slowly all day.

We had one, but never used it. It's not here now, but I don't know or remember what happened to it.

They do work good. I make my chicken soup in one plus the beef stroganoff.
So you could call what you're making chilli because of the beans!
