    Beans: Dry to Can conversion

I know those of us that cook beans regularly probably don’t need this. Or maybe we do since we just cook by look and feel (for sure Mr. Bones and fzxdoc are like me about this).

Anyhow, in looking for the conversion so that I could document it right in my Minestrone recipe, I stumbled across this on Serious Eats and it’s a great tool. Thought I’d post the conversion chart AND the link.

General rule, though, is that 4.5 oz dried beans is equal to a 15 oz can of beans.

And here’s the actual article: Can I Substitute Dried Beans For Canned?

The conversion table by common bean types
    Cannellini 1 pound. 2 lb. 8 oz. (6.5 cups)
    Chickpeas 1 pound 3 lb. 4 oz. (7 cups)
Red Kidney 1 pound 2 lb. 7 oz. (6.5 cups)
    Pinto 1 pound 2 lb. 5 oz. (6.5 cups)
    Black 1 pound 2 lb. 5 oz. (7 cups)
    Black-Eyed Peas 1 pound 2 lb. 13 oz. (6.5 cups)

Ya, I usually figure about 3 cans equal 1 pound dry.

      ya, what size can?
Perhaps, you can count the number of beans in a pound and . . . well you get the idea.

Since you guys introduced me to Rancho Gordo, we don’t have any canned beans in the house lol. Thanks though, soup season is here so I am sure I’ll use this

Most recipes I run into call for canned beans, so this is handy in reverse :-)
