Jar Opening Trick…Has Anyone Tried This?

I just ran across this short and to the point video. This could be a game changer for older folks who have a hard time opening new jars, or anyone really. It supposedly works great and only takes a second or two. My favorite salsa comes in a jar that is a major pain for me to get open, when it’s new. It takes every bit of strength I have to get it open! Can’t wait to try this on my next purchase. A few of the commenters mention a small flat head screw driver works just as well.

Yep. Just be really careful not to chip the glass jar.

Which would probably be more of a worry with a screwdriver than a table knife, I imagine.

I think the cordless angle grinder with cutoff wheel would be even better.
Would also distribute the contents in a farther reaching spray.

Polarbear777. Yes. I had the saws all handy, but the angle grinder with a diamond blade would provide more precision, and better effects. 😎

My kid likes to sabre open champagne bottles. Wonder if that would work for salsa?

The older I get the better that looks

Idk. I’m not in favor of using any kind of force on glass.

Running hot water over the lid has ALWAYS worked for me. The hot water makes the metal expand a tiny bit. If it doesn’t work with a 10 second bath, try longer; if that doesn’t work, microwave the water in a bowl for a minute and turn the jar upside down into it, lid deep. Every single jar I’ve done this with, over 70 years, has opened.

We've had one of these in the front of the silverware drawer for years, easily breaks the seal and no chance of chipping the glass. jar. Called a JarKey

What is that? I have never seen that.
Almost looks obscene--I would give that a try. More info requested.

Good info. It can get really difficult here with the altitude pressure differential, things really pop when packaged at a much lower elevation. Potato chip bags can explode in the car while going over a high pass. I like that JarKey.

A dear friend of mine was a paraplegic. He taught me this trick and was so proud of himself because he could open jars for girls. LOL

Geez John. My mom taught me that when I was about 8 years old. BUT, the advice to be careful not to chip the jar is real. Be careful.

This is what I use. From a Canadian web site but I am sure it is available somewhere in the US. Works on all jars by releasing the pressure, and no danger of chipping the jar.

Many years ago my wife and her twin sister were in a Lee Valley store in London, ON and they met Mr. Lee. He was a diplomat for Cdn. government and started the stores after he retired. They sell a lot of different things.

PLEASE do not make links to places like Lee Valley. It causes me to go down SOOOO many rabbit holes.

Bought this and mounted it under the cabinet, forget it's there until ya need it. Id will chew up a lid if you like to save them that could be an issue but I love the thing.
