Just tap one of the non crimped sections on the edge of the counter. If that fail, get the .45 colt canopener.

250 grain deep curl, 22 grains H110 starline brass, and winchester large primer NEVER fail to get you into just about anything. ecowper

Easy Peazy! Nice handle grip for a bit of leverage. The serated strip held on by three rivets works every time. Grips the outside of the lid.
Heating also works wonders. Click image for larger version

Depending on the thickness of the rim of the jar lid my experience is that a beer can opener (some folks call it a church key), the kind with one end for cans and the other for bottles will break the seal and let the lid be removed easily. Make sure you use the end intended for bottles. When that won't work I generally use a flat blade screwdriver or table knife to pop the seal. Haven't broken any glass yet but I'm pretty careful. I do really like the Lee Valley opener.

I shared the tip with an older lady today. She said she just stabs the lid with an ice pick.
Old school, but I bet that will work.

But a bit of plastic wrap (Saran??) under the lid would solve that problem.

Yeah, but why go that route when there’s a better and easier solution? No need to mess with the Syran Wrap.

Just ask her last three husbands.

          Wait. You can't.

Nice. Now I don’t have to ask the wife to open the jar for me!

I enjoy the manly task of opening a jar for SWMBO.

I've been doing this since I was a little kid, and I don't remember who taught me. You can sometimes tap lightly all around the top of the lid with handle of the butter knife to get it done, too.

That’s usually how I do it…. I have jar lids with little nicks in it…

I’ve done the lid tap with the butter knife and the hot water on the lid routine plenty of times myself. The video looks to be quick and easy.

It's best to tap the lid of a jar and do the two-step at the same time.

Turn jar upside down and strike the lid flat against the counter. Never fails.

I usually put a couple of thicknesses of dish towel on the counter before doing that, mainly to avoid damaging the hard quartz resin counter.

I use my silicon bbq glove to improve my grip on jars when my normal grip strength isn’t enough. Works a charm most of the time.

          This is uncomfortably pragmatic.

I want to make sure this doesn't get lost. I, for one, really need to know more about the experience of exploding potato chip bags while traveling at relatively high velocity in a motor vehicle in the mountains.

The bag expands and goes booom. Chips don't fly but the bag exploding will catch you off guard. Physics at work in a chip bag.

Placing the lid under hot running water for a bit works as well.

Try one of those paint can openers . The curved end is easier on the glass , It just takes a little pry and the seal lets go.

Alright! I just tried this tip for the first time and it works great! This is a new jar of the salsa I mentioned that is extremely hard to open when new. Usually in the past, I’d do the hot water on the lid routine, I won’t anymore. This is quicker and easier.

ACTUAL UNEDITED VIDEO OF ME OPENING THE NEW JAR….

Our local appliance store (they do still exist) gives out 4-inch pebbled-rubber disks when you buy an appliance. Yet another reason to keep them in business!

I second Bruce's recommendation for this Brix Jarkey opener for that type of jar. You can get it in two sizes. It's easy to use, could not chip the glass, and the jar is open in half a second.

Here's the link for the larger size Brix Jarkey. It's handy to have too.
