What Are Your Favorite Cook Books And Why? Bonus Points For Pictures!

The good old-fashioned cookbook has taken a beating over the last 20 years or so, but they remain a favorite way to learn and cook, for many of us…still. The internet has made it so easy to find what you want, but I for one, still use my trusty old hardbacks sometimes. I thought it would be pretty cool to see what type of cookbooks others have and what you like about them. There’s something about touching the pages, holding it in your hands and seeing the pictures on paper that an iPad can’t duplicate. In fact, I used one of my cookbooks just last night.

Show us your favorite cookbooks, or all of em if you want! What do you like about your favorites and which one[s] do you recommend for a certain type of cuisine? I for one, am especially interested in good recommendations for Asian style cooking, I definitely could use some pointers there. Bonus points if you can show us the full front cover…..One favor I’d like to ask please, could we limit this discussion to actual cookbooks you can hold in your hands and nothing online, such as chefs and their videos or recipes? I’d like to honor the good old fashioned cookbook itself…

Here’s pretty much all my cook books, by category. It ain’t too impressive, but the ones I have are good ones!

I’LL START OFF WITH SOME BBQ COOKBOOKS

That dude on the top left might look a little shady, 😂 but damn, I’ve learned so much from him and his book! If you don’t have Aaron Franklin’s book, it’s a must read. Not a whole lot of recipes, but what I found so interesting was his story of how he got started in smoking meats and his first cheap offset smokers he had. I haven’t finished The Brisket Chronicles yet, but if there’s a way to cook brisket, it’s in there.

    MY CAJUN/CREOLE LOUISIANA STYLE COOKBOOKS

My favorite Cajun/Louisiana style cuisine cookbook is from Paul Prudhomme. Jaw dropping pics and honest to goodness authentic and tasty recipes. This man is God in Louisiana, forget the latest TV celebrity dudes. A close second is Justin Wilson’s Homegrown Louisiana Cookin’. I’ve made some of the best meals I’ve had from these 2 Louisiana legends.

    A FEW ASSORTED STYLE COOKBOOKS

I think America The Beautiful might have been my first, or close to it, cookbook I ever purchased. There’s a lot of different styles of cuisine from all across The United States. Soul Food Cafe is a collection of recipes from the Sabine Pass United Methodist Church. Sabine Pass is a small town on the Gulf near the Beaumont - Port Arthur area. My mom was a school teacher there for many years and gave me this one. Lots of home style recipes from regular people.

Anyway, thanks for reading this and…..Show Us Your Cookbooks!

EDIT: Paperback cookbooks are welcome too!

I don't really use cook books but I'm a suckered for those paperback recipe books they sell at supermarket check outs.
I have three or four on southern or Mexican cooking I refer to.
I get an idea of a recipe then add or delete, embelish or destroy as I see fit.

I sat in my sofa the other day, had some time to just chill. So I looked around the room, and a stack of books on my 'drink wagon' caught my eye. I realize there's a slight bias

    ... Dang "Newbies" ....

I searched for 10 minutes for a similar topic before I decided to post this, didn’t see that. Anyway, that’s 5 years old …..time for a refresher course Junior. 🥸

My go to cookbook is of course this one. When eating varmints and roadkill nothing beat this book. All the explaining necessary is right on the front cover.

I have many Cookbooks I have collected over the years.

This one stands always out. Evidently many many years ago I picked it up an a garage sale for .40. Some of the recipes are real hokey. But is always fun to look at.

My wife has tried to throw this book away numerous times...I'm glad I always intercepted to save some hokey BBQ history.

Here are the cookbooks that Stacy and I use the most

        Stacy’s faves
        The Thousand Recipe Chinese Cookbook
Mastering The Art Of French Cooking
Better Homes And Gardens: New Cook Book

        My faves
Meathead - The Science of Great Barbecue
Chasing Smoke: Cooking Over Fire Around The Levant
Henrik - Barbecue Fire And Smoke
Chris Lilly’s Big Bob Gibson’s BBQ Book
        Steve Raichlen’s The Brisket Chronicles
The Food Lab ….. in fact, cooking Kenji’s Cassoulet recipe tonight :-)

        Oooops, forgot the why …..

Stacy learned to cook Chinese from that first book, which her mother had before her. And her stir fries are pretty killer. Boeuf Bourguignon is one of Stacy’s signature meals, and she got it straight from Julia Child. I posted her technique on Pitmaster a couple years ago. There’s a bunch of different recipes from New Cook Book!

As far as mine …. Well, Meathead is who taught me to really cook ribs right, so he gets mucho credit. Chris Lilly’s book is one I go to over and over for sauces, rubs, how to do ham, how to cook chicken, great cookbook. Love the really unique recipes that Henrik gives us in his book. The Food Lab ….. duh. The other two, Chasing Smoke and Brisket Chronicles, have really added new horizons and options to my cooking. I find myself going to them time after time right now for ideas.

          Uh oh

recipe for Rosemary-Smoke Lamb Chops may be missing some details.

“Prepare a fire in a grill. Position oiled rack 4-6 inches above the fire”

could be worse directions, we suppose.

”Grill, turning two or three times…until browned but still pink in the center. About 8 minutes”

No mention of what temp. and yet the intro to the book said a meat thermometer would be a useful tool. Oh well.

This is maybe half of them, many are vintage - I like looking at some of the weird Mid-Century recipes. The ones I use the most (many are stacked in the kitchen or by the easy chair) are:

            Franklin's books
            Meathead
            Kenji's books
            All three Kent Rollins books
and quite a few more not listed are referenced periodically.

At this point AR and the internets such as youtube are my main sources.
