The cafeteria in the hospital I work at has the prepackaged ones in the fridge. They're not bad, but certainly not like sushi restaurant fresh. While too pricey, they're prob half the price of the real deal. I get them occasionally when the mood strikes.

I pick it up regularly. Sprouts and Publix are all over here, and both have sushi in any of the stores I've been in. Both also have $5 Wednesdays. Publix has a larger variety, but both are good, and both usually have someone there making it for the biggest part of the day. The sushi lady at my closest Publix will stop and ask if there is something specific I want. I'm a bit picky, no fake crab, no uni or eel, no cream cheese, and light on the spicy mayo, and she gets it right.
I took a sushi making class about ten years ago, it's pretty easy once you learn the roll (kind of like egg roll making), doesn't take a lot of equipment, and I found the rate limiting step is accessing the fish. I've seen "sushi grade tuna" here and there, but I need to find out just what "sushi grade" is. Hasn't provoked me that much, because good sushi is so easy to get around here.

There's actually no such thing as "sushi grade" fish of any kind. It's a just a marketing term applied with no regulatory input whatsoever.

I'll get it when I'm picking up groceries and want a quick nigiri and/or Rainbow Roll snack. Compared to a good sushi place, Publix/grocery sushi is like McDonalds vs a restaurant/pitmaster club burger: good for what it is.

For some who wondered how it compares to a sushi restaurant. a sushi chef uses some rice vinegar in the rice, the seafood is much fresher (better color and texture), and the wasabi is real (grocery store "wasabi" is a colored horseradish mixture. Also, more fish options. But I had Publix sushi yesterday...better for me than McDonalds.

Our Kroger Sushi department is a Chef that came from his own place, dntn Cincy. If it is the same guy, he has been there since the early eighties. I like their sushi and they do the $5 wed thing.

The sushi chefs at my Kroger are fluent in Spanish and English. They make incredibly good sushi!

                Y'all have lost your minds.

I mean, this is a meat BBQ'ing site, and you guys talk about eating raw fish.
                Raw, for God's sake.

What if we slather em in some Stubb’s? That ok? 🤓

                  No.

Slather them with hot cooking oil.

Actually, our local has stickers on some of the selections saying that it is cooked. Not all sushi is raw fish.

I can eat it, but I'm not a big sushi fan, so no, no grocery store sushi. I have had grocery store General Tso's chicken that was pretty good, and of course gas station hot dogs.

Sure…HEB when in Waco, Publix when in Cocoa Beach…both are pretty decent for a quick snack. Restaurant grade? No…but they’re also 1/3 the price…and it’s quick & convenient…just the thing sometimes. And better than 99% of fast food out there.

A market near me makes it fresh…but there’s an actual sushi place within walking distance of that. So if I’m home and want it, that’s usually where I go. If I have time, I’ll make it myself. My current fish monger is Dry Dock Fish Co. in Fullerton. https://drydockfish.com
The cool thing about them is that they hit up SEVERAL farmer’s markets in SoCal…and if one calls ahead…they can bring along whatever you’re looking for. :-)

Yep. Here in FL we have Publix srocery stores, and they make fresh sushi every week. It's pretty good.

We don’t have a HEB here. Or a Kroger or except delivery. The local (OKC area)big grocery chain has a sushi thing and I get it quite often and it’s decent. Not the best ever but not bad by any stretch. I mean I will eat some gas station sushi too so what do I know.

Oh, gas stations is where I would draw the line. I mean, gas station hot dogs are enough to endure…not risking the sushi.

Jewel-Osco (Albertson’s) here in Chicago does some pretty good sushi. The one time te tried Meijer’s sushi it was pretty good too.

I actually have. Our local chain grocery Weis Markets has sushi Wednesday. I give them an A for effort, and at
least a solid 7 out of 10. Nowhere near the quality of my favorite sushi restaurant, but hey, for a quick Wednesday night dinner, not bad. Their seaweed salad is pretty good too.

Oh man, there’s a place I used to go for sushi, had a great seaweed salad! Never thought I’d be typing out that sentence one day….🤓

I love sushi. My sister in law swears by the grocery store stuff, but I just can’t bring myself to buy it. Just seems wrong to me.

Try it… There are only two outcomes. It will either be pretty decent and make for a quick lunch kinda thing…or it will be gawd awful and you’ll never go back. Either way, they’re generally priced to be worth the “risk.”
