    Ever Had Grocery Store….Sushi?! 😳

Most of the HEB’s around town have a small area in the store set up to sell Sushi, spring rolls, pot stickers and a couple of other Japanese food items. They have Japanese employees actually making the food fresh on site each day. Last month on a whim I decided to try some sushi and pot stickers. Today I bought some more sushi [Philadelphia rolls] and some pork egg rolls. I’ve had sushi before from a couple of really good restaurants in the past, so I’ve got an idea of how they should taste. Gotta tell ya, for sushi from the grocery store, this wasn’t bad at all! No, it wasn’t restaurant quality, but for 7 bucks for 10 rolls, ya can’t beat it. The 2 pork egg rolls I had were also pretty darn decent! The local Kroger I used to shop at also has the same setup, but never tried theirs. I’d give the HEB sushi a good 7.5 on a 10 scale. Have any of you ever tried sushi from your local grocery store?

On Wednesday the sushi is only $7.00

They give you wasabi and soy sauce with your sushi and the spring rolls come with a pretty good orange dipping sauce.

Yes,today Kroger had theirs for $5.00 and I had a $1.00 off coupon so a net $4.00 for spicy California roll. Mine was just ok. No spring rolls available. Same package as your HEB.

We had the same deal at our local Kroger on Monday this week, so I bought some with imitation crab meat. They called it a "Buckeye roll" (lol), obviously targeted for Central Ohio. Was perfectly fine. Whenever I see it on sale, I'll grab something different each time.

    Absolutely!

Their spicy tuna and Philadelphia rolls (what you got) are quite good. If I'm in there around lunch, I always seem to pick one up, especially if I see them actively making them.

Some of them that they make can get a bit extravagant (and expensive). I'm actually surprised they sell as much as they do. Masa Sushi is literally right next door -- same complex -- as my HEB.

And I love the flower-thing they do with the wasabi.

You bet. Been doing it for years. Love picking up an avocado roll or cucumber roll. Nice little snacks.

Have you ever tried making sushi? It's not that hard.

TripleB $5 sushi on Wednesdays at Sprouts! And stater brothers (mine anyways) has a pretty big sushi selection now, too.

Yep, a good grocery store sushi can be quite good. HEB's was above average (surprising nobody), and I've had very acceptable sushi at several other stores. I'm fer it.

We have some maybe 1-2 times a month. In fact, my wife had Pavilions sushi for her dinner tonite. It can OK, but most store bought sushi usually has very mediocre rice. Since we eat fairly often at our favorite sushi restaurant, the grocery is definitely the fallback. Given my current medical challenges, we haven’t been there, thus her choice to get some.

anyway, it can be decent and relatively decently priced, just not that good IMO.

Absolutely. Our local grocery store is only a block away and the sushi is always fresh as they move a lot of it. I was always impressed how many staff could occupy such a small area and be as productive as they are. The same people have been operating the “sushi bar” for at least 13 years as that is when we moved into the neighborhood. The only difference I can tell between store sushi and restaurant sushi is presentation. Restaurants do not have to present their sushi in plastic take away packages. Other than that very little difference, if any.

Nope - waiting for steak or fried chicken sushi.

In addition to my comment above… Lazy Acres (Bristol farms) has an extensive ceviche bar.

Yeah. we had a store here, I know one of my patients used to work for them making sushi rolls every day. She was... from... Myanmar, I think. You know, so that makes her... Burnese.

She was a cute little thing. Actually now that I think about it, she wasn't my patient, I saw her three little kids, not her. Cute family, and she really was a cutie, and the tiniest little thing. MAYBE 4'10" or so. I liked seeing her family. They've moved on to somewhere else now, sadly.

What’s this got to do with trying grocery store sushi? …. 🙄 🤓

She made sushi for a grocery store - fresh every day. I woulda gotten around to trying it, but I kept forgetting, and it's a store I seldom go to. Now I can't, I think they don't do it anymore - prolly not enough volume to keep it up. Not a huge seller around here, I'd think.

Heck yeah, I grab some sushi at Kroger on occasion. Not half bad, in my experience, and reasonably priced.

Can't say I've ever walked in to my Kroger and said "You know, I think I'll eat some raw fish today".

Kinda funny - 80% of the Health code violations for that Kroger are in the Sushi department.
