Thankfully, my splitting area is right next to the wood bunk. But, yeah, it certainly heats you more than twice. Alan Brice

Jeeeze man. You got anymore trees left in Minnesota?

          That is quite impressive John.

Ha, these were all standing dead, unfortunately. Ash borer really doing a number on the ash trees.

I replaced the stove and stack on our sauna this past weekend. This was a fun project. I added a cathedral insert to help seal in the heat to the ceiling. That was a huge issue for us the last 8 years or so. This baby rips! This was as fun project.

*I added some high temp silicone to the flashing and stack. I am not a professional by any means, but I think I did okay for a farm job.

I also got a cool shot of the wood/sauna yard when I was up on the roof.

And I had to add a picture of my new wood bunk. I have almost two full cords stacked in there right now. I be able to stack two more rows of wood. Then I will have about 4 cords stack in this baby.

Ooooooh, gotcha. Well we hang out by the sauna for hours. We build a big fire, split wood, cook dinner etc. So it's not a concern. oh yeah.......and my buddies parents live there, it's their farm. We always joke that his mom is watching us go from the sauna to the creek all the time. Standing out in that MN winter after cold plunging is an experience. More than one reason to get back in the heat! Dan Deter Alan Brice

Thank you. I should update the picture because this baby is plumb full at this point! Andrrr

I had to take down an ash tree this weekend. EAB got another one in my yard. I got about a cord out of this tree. I didn't have time to split this up by hand, so I had to break out the 28-ton to speed things up. I stacked this on pallets and covered them later with some sheet metal to keep the weather off the wood. (Ripley was there to help out) This should be good to go for the 2025-2026 season. It will be great for BBQ too, if I need a more neutral wood flavor.

Yep! Well I hope you enjoyed watching this. For some, it brings back bad memories of being forced to do this kinda stuff. For me, I always loved being in the wood yard. There is just something about it that I love. mrteddyprincess

I got a massive chip drop on Friday. Three trailer loads of Honey Locust. I brought it down to the wood yard to start splitting it up. It was a mud pit down at the sauna area. The ground is frozen but the top inch has thawed out. I would guess I will get at least 4 cords of split wood out of this. (The racks below are 13' feet long.) Honey locust is one of the best species for firewood. Takes a while to dry but it burns really hot.

Did some tree work over at my Dad’s place. We took out about 20 ash trees. I brought about 4 dump trailer loads of logs down to the sauna. Gonna be working on this pile over the summer. Time to get splitting and building another Holzhauzen.

They are doing well! This one is ready to be unstacked and put in the bin for finishing wood in the sauna. This is the last picture I’ve taken. This was on February 8th.

I agree, the barefoot shoes were a bad call. I was not planning on having to get out of the Bobcat to move anything but the logs were stacked too hight to reach. So I needed to get out and move a few. Alan Brice

            Spinaker,

Here’s a couple photos of our sauna out at camp. Eastern Upper Peninsula Michigan.

There is no electricity at camp so we use it as sauna and shower facilities when we are there.

Wow! That is awesome. I would love to hear the story behind this. Things like these always have a story! What a great setting too.

It’s not big but it works well for us.

Inside is about 10’ x 16’ divided into two rooms. You enter into the dressing room as shown in the second photo. Wood stove extends through the wall. Fire box is fed from dressing room, Lake Superior black stones and back of hot stove are in sauna room.

We have two 5-gallon water jugs on a rack up on the wall with spigots that are used for showering when the water heats up.

The wood storage is under the eve on the right side of the building. We mostly cut trees that have died so the wood photo is mostly jack pine on the right and white birch on the left.

We have a get together out there the first weekend in May so I can post a couple interior shots.

That is a really cool set up. I kinda wish awe had built a changing room into ours. But we were using whole logs and it was just too much. I love the external feed stove too. One thing I do like about ours is the glass we have one the stove, it lights up the inside at night. We have no power at our sauna either so it sets a nice ambiance. I look forward to seeing your photos in May! Thanks for sharing. You have a really cool set up.

Disassembly of the first Holzhausen has begun. Most of the wood is testing out at 13%. Plenty dry for the sauna and great for smoking! I found a few critters in the pile and one squirrel decided to spend his last days near the top. Disassembly has been pretty easy. I removed the roof and then began to work my way down. I did not have too many major avalanches of wood but I had to be careful. I have restocked and covered the wood in our staging area for the sauna.

Now it will be time to remove the old pallets, do a regrading of the ground under the pallets and then start another one with all the ash I have waiting to be split. This was a great way to store all of this wood while it was drying. I found it to be very effective and it made for a really cool display. People loved seeing it when they would come down to use the sauna. I still have the other Holzhausen up and that one will stay up until next year. I will post pictures of the new one I will build when I get around to it.

Things are taking shape once again. Holzhausen part 3 has begun. This one is about 2 feet wider than the first one I built last year.

So far I have a mixture of ash and honey locust. I am going to split all the honey locust first as that is some of the best firewood out there. My plan is to go all the way to 8 feet high on the sides, then fill the middle and, somehow, put a bark shingle roof on this baby. (Might have to get the telehandler out for that one, πŸ˜„) Stay tuned as she grows over the next few weekends!
