    Good work Spinaker,

I did get to camp this weekend and here is a photo of some of our wood storage for campfires.

This is three railroad ties buried vertically, with two railroad ties raised off the ground horizontally. In this case, they make two wood racks and hold a little more than two cords total.

Seems like someone always has some railroad ties they don’t want and that’s how we got these. Out of pocket cost on this project was $0.

    Tom

P.S. did not get any more sauna photos to contribute but will later this week.

Very nice! I use ties for my logs in the staging area. They are great for keeping things up off the ground.

Looking forward to those sauna pictures!

The Holzhausen grows. I put another few rows up and added about 1/3 of a cord to the midddle. We still have a lot more wood to stack but we are progressing.

      Here you go Spinaker,

I re-handled a couple axes this past winter. I had that “I think there is an old axe in the shed” thought and came up with two cruiser axes.

The first axe is a Kelly Axe & Tool Works 2-1/2 pound axe on a 28” Whiskey River handle.

I didn’t want to repeat the same thing so I bought a 20” Whiskey River handle for the second axe. The second axe is 2 pound 9 ounce Gambles Artisan.

The sheaths are from Beaver Tooth Handle Company. I like the quality and thought the price was reasonable.

Spinaker, I’ve had these for a long time but just kind of used them as they were. Somebody took the Gambles Artisan to a bench grinder at some point and the cutting edges were pretty rough. Took some time to clean up.

I bought the sheaths because I thought it would increase the chances of actually using them if the bits were covered. Toss them in the truck, put one in the camper, whatever.

        @texastweeter,

I have two more axes I’m working on. A hatchet and camp axe really.

It will probably be winter before I finish them but I’ll post photos when complete.

The Holzhausen is up to about 8 feet now. It is almost time to start filling the middle. I already have a bunch of off cuts and knotty pieces in the middle, but I have more wood to split and plenty more to fill this beast with.

My wife found something on insta about Holzhausen and I was like, yeah, I know what that is and how to build one. I'm pretty sure that was not the reaction she was looking for LOL!

Mount a howitzer, or even just a ma deuce in the middle.

        Spinaker,

Thought I would bump this thread as we head into fall and may use more firewood. Here is a photo of our wood storage at the beach. There is also a small pile behind this rack that we are using up right now.

Almost time to put the bark shingles up! This baby is massive. 10 feet in diameter and at least 12 ft at the peak. As you can see the middle is packed full and peaked up nicely. I’ll post some more picks once I start on the roof. Gotta go cut some more rounds from the log pile!

Spinaker Ok for those of us who have no idea what to do with that much wood, where do you start removing wood when it’s time to use it?

You pick a side and start taking it down as you need it. I unstacked the first one once I had room in the regular wood bunk. For the other two, I am going to pull wood as I need it. I am not gonna re stack it

More progress folks. I cut a ton of shingles tonight for the roof. Sabrina and I got the first ring done last night, but she had to work at the hospital tonight, so it was just me and Ripster tonight, I got close to the top, but I ran outta shingles. Gonna have to cut more rounds to get more shingle wood for the back side.

Then you might understand that this about more than just firewood. This gives me outside time. I get therapy points from outdoor manual labor. I can split wood for hours. I love the sounds of the axe, the smell of the fresh cut wood, 2-cycle exhaust, the gentleman's fire going on the side, having the dogs around, and I can always see my progress. Richard Chrz

Spinaker I liked it for all the same reasons,

So how do you access the top to fill and then shingle? Ladders, then crawl up on top? Or a $40,000 cherry picker manlift?
          Perhaps a trebuchet?

Haha, that is nuts. yeah, crossbow are real dangerous. Crazy amount of energy stored in a small space. I guess he figured since you made them at school, there less liability than your .22. Eh?

The Catholic church banned the use of crossbows against Christians in the middle ages.

yeah......literally why they were invented them, to pierce armour. One of the first armor piercing rounds. I could see why the church did not want their godly knights being dropped from horseback by some peasant with a cross bow. RonB

I previously posted exterior photos of our camp sauna but the interior photos I had were not that great.

Here are newer photos of interior.

View through the door into dressing room showing sauna stove. The stove surround is four layers of 1/2” drywall covered with aluminum flashing. Has provided a good heat barrier to the wooden walls for over thirty years:

This shows the door open and the 5 gallon water jug we use for showers. The water rack holds two five gallon jugs. The water is heated by the heat from the room. If you’re not careful, you can get the water too hot.

            @Spinaker

The bowling pins are actually targets we hang on the range. They’re just stored there for now.

The water heat is nice since it sometimes gets used just as a shower without a full sauna.

Here are additional photos of the stove. A friend of mine welded it for us. The stove sides and ends are 1/4” steel plate and the fire box is a 20” steel pipe with 1/4” thick walls. The door is a re-used from another random stove.

There is also an air gap between the stove and surround.

The exterior stove loading is great, although I do love the flicker of the fire inside our sauna since ours is off-grid. Your set up is certainly nicer and better finished than ours. I love the aluminum framing around the stove.
