Gorgeous morning down at the sauna. The Holzhaulsen is looking good with all that snow. I love that we finally got some snow!

This is a Christmas card photo. Or would be if you, Sabrina, and Ripley were in the middle of it. What a gorgeous shot, with the sunlight dappling through the trees, the purity of the snowscape, and of course the layout of the space, dominated by that amazing Holzhausen.

Spinaker I have enjoyed your post and pictures on the Holzhaulsen. To get the logs out, how do you do that? Is it a big game of Jenga?

Thanks! You start by taking part of the roof down and then you work your way down. It does get a little hairy. However, with each row I placed, I tapped it with a sledge hammer to get the pieces of wood set in tightly to the stack. I am hoping that will help keep things tight. However, I am sure it will be a bit of a challenge to keep things in order. Stay tuned for that part. I plan on doing a monthly update as time goes on. It will be fun to see how it changes over time as it dries!

Refilled the back porch wood rack (yes I had it built in) that got depleted in the last cold front. Don't mind the genny, just doing some maintenance on her from this year's deer season.

Spinaker will it be navy or red? Me thinks with a few chews the mice have a very covetous nest indeed. 🔥🔥🐿️

Navy or black. If I pack some cedar in there I should be fine. 😎

Also, here’s the update on the first Holzhausen. One month in. No real difference in color or size and shape of the Holzhausen. I think it will take some summer sun to see real changes. The sun doesn’t pack much of a punch in Minnesota this time of year.

Yeah those grain bins hold corn, usually. Sometimes soy beans. There is an old silo (you can see the top of it in the first photo) in the way back by the barn, but that’s been empty since the 60’s.

Another Holzhausen is in the works. I almost have the side done. Now need to start filling this beast. This one is a mix of oak, ash, elm and some boxelder.

Is there only one design for these wood stacks? Or can you build them differently each time?

You can build them how ever you want. Some people make a spiral pattern, or they combine two different types of stacks. STEbbq

The new Holzhausen has grown. The walls are done and she is just about full in the center. I’ve got some ash rounds to split up before I can start to build up the peak in the middle. I should have enough bark pieces for shingles. (Pictured in between the Holzhausens) If not, there is plenty more ash out there to cut and split. (Thanks to the damn EAB invasion)

She's a keeper folks! Sabrina made it through quite a few rounds of Ash last night. We are getting close to finishing the second Holzhausen. Last night, all the wood we split went to fill the middle of this beast. There is at least 2 cords of wood in here so far.

We had a productive day down at the sauna. I have the middle filled and I’ve started to make the peak. I will lay the shingle bark pieces on top once I get more wood in the center.

I added stumps for me to stand on so I can better reach the top as wood is added. Last time I simply threw the pieces up on top, which resulted in a very uneven roof structure.

      I, uh, feel a little inadequate. :-p

Here's my current fuel set up. I have plans to build a small woodshed once I get my Yoder offset (hopefully the end of this year). Right now, though, with just my 22" kettle, this arrangement is doing the trick. I'll be getting two more of the smaller bins: one for hickory and one for oak.

Hahaha, you are doing fine. We all start somewhere. Also, I may have developed a problem with my obsession. So you might be on the right side of this.

Monthly update……..Not much of change. However, once we get into the summer months and that Sun if higher in the sky, the wood will really start to change. The pieces on the right in the last picture are the shingles for the new Holzhausen. (Which I hope to finish this weekend)

I think you should do art prints. You might not quite be an Andy Goldsworthy but with some planning and a Holzhausen timelapse series you could give him a run for his money. 🔥🔥🐿️ Spinaker I think y’all are kindred spirits. You should check him out!

I’d love to do a time lapse, but I’d have to have all the wood split before starting it. For sure possible, I just don’t generally cut and stack wood like that. I do when I split with the log splitter though, which I really don’t use any more.

I checked out Goldsworthy……..that is some wild stuff. Really cool outdoor art. I love that stuff. MsTwiggy

I took down this silver maple for sauna wood for next year. This should be all the wood I need to finish out the cutting season. This will put us at about 6 cords for sauna season and syrup camp for next year.

This was about an 80 footer down in the river bottoms (MN River). She had a bit of a lean, so I had to make a sizable under cut, then bore cut it in the middle to take care of the heartwood so she would not splinter up on me and casue a really dangerous situation. After making the bore cut, I made the trigger cut on the back side and down she went! I would say we have about 2.5 cods of wood in this baby when it all said and done. Enough wood to finish my Holzhausen and start filling the normal wood bunks. (More on that later) Time to get Ripley in the truck, light up that fire, and better get to splittin'
