Hey guys and gals, over the last few weeks I’ve done some research on the best dining spots in Lafayette. Based on online reviews, recommendations from Beefchop who lives in Lafayette, Facebook posts and magazine write ups, along with some recommendations from friends of 58limited , I’ve come up with some places for us to dine at that will surely represent the best of Lafayette! I’ve put together a “recommended” itinerary for the weekend, which includes our Saturday swamp tour and another type of tour for Friday afternoon. As usual, everyone is free to go where you like and do what you want, not a problem!

10/23 Thursday afternoon/evening - With several people flying/driving in from other states we’ll try to be flexible with the dinner time if needed. As usual, we all meet in the hotel lobby after checking in, for a meet and greet, drinks and to just generally tell a bunch of lies. 🤓 This is usually anywhere from around 4-5 until about 6:30 or so. I found a Mexican restaurant for dinner that night, got excellent overall reviews. With a crowd of our size, I can make us reservations a few days ahead of time, maybe for around 7 pm.

Order online directly from the restaurant Mezcal Mexican Restaurant, browse the Mezcal Mexican Restaurant menu, or view Mezcal Mexican Restaurant hours.

10/24 Friday lunch at Laura’s 2 Soul Food Cafe - From everything I’ve heard about this place, I think it’s a definite must try! They’re not open for dinner so….

After lunch there’s a place in Lafayette called Acadian Village I thought we could visit. It’s a collection of old Cajun homes in a small village which are filled with authentic antiques from back in the day. Self guided walking tour. I’ve done it before and it’s really cool to see how they lived back in the 1800’s.

Friday night dinner…6:30 - 7 pm Don’s Seafood is a must try, according to lots of folks on a Lafayette Facebook page, as well as a national magazine article I saw….forgot which one. 🧐

Get a tasty, Cajun meal at Don's Seafood. Visit our website for more information on our restaurant and menu.

10/25 Saturday lunch …11-11:30 am A place which also comes highly recommended is Johnson’s Boucaniere. Our fellow pit member Beefchop also recommended it.

Saturday at 2 pm - The swamp tour begins! We need to be there no later than 1:45, so we’ll need to leave Lafayette for the swamp tour at 1:15. There’s plenty of other attractions in Lafayette for anyone who won’t be doing the tour.

Saturday night……6:30 dinner at Bon Temps This is a place I’ve really been wanting to try, especially when I saw one of the locals declare it to have the best gumbo in town! [next to her grandma’s] 😂

Sunday am…. Coffee in the lobby and say our goodbyes.

With the exception of the swamp tour, all times are approximate and can be adjusted if needed.

Kim n I would like to stay with the group. I realize y'all went thru the Tabasco event last time, I think that will be a must see for us.
I have heard from a good source, if you canoe or kayak in these parts, you are part of the food chain. 8-I>

Vermilionville, Bon Temps, Avery Island, all recommend! Vermilionville has a little restaurant with good, authentic Cajun food. Get a "Don's Old Fashioned" at Don's.

The Tabasco tour is a self guided tour, so you can stroll along at your own pace. Theres no certain times you need to be there. There’s also signs along the way explaining what you’re seeing and there’s park benches scattered throughout, if you need to rest your a$$ for a while…🤓

There is also the "Jungle Garden" which is a great relaxing drive through manicured and unmanicured land on the island.

For anyone interested in doing the Tabasco tour, right down the street is Avery Island Jungle Gardens, it’s a 3 mile driving, walking or cycling path taking you through some absolutely beautiful scenery! Do not miss this if you go to Avery Island…..👍

All of the restaurants that Panhead John posted look great! The problem is that there are so many great places to eat at in that region that it will take multiple trips to hit them all. One place that may interest some of you is about a 30-40 minute drive in a town called Arnaudville: Little Big Cup on the banks of Bayou Fusilier.

I have seen a lot of rave reviews and lots on my friends from SE Texas have gone there and give them nothing but praise.

It would be a place that you would want to go to during the day - lots of narrow unlighted roads to get there and it looks like we would have to make a reservation.

Panhead John I was thinking Friday too but I don't want to miss out on Laura's either. Maybe instead of a second breakfast we'll need to do a second lunch LOL. Looking at their website a reservation is a must for Friday-Sunday.

58limited We can move Laura’s to Saturday and instead just skip Johnson’s Boucinaire on Saturday. Wouldn’t bother me a bit.

Quick dumb question: for those of us driving in, but planning on helping with airport pickups. I know the hotel info says airport just a few miles, I don't know the size of the Lafayette airport. Is there a cell phone lot for waiting, or can you pull up to baggage claim and wait. If they won't let you sit there and wait, do you just circle, or is there somewhere you can wait? I know seems stupid question, but so many airports now block "hovering" so you need to either circle around or wait in alternate location.

Panhead John not "hell bent", but rather being nice. I would be happy to do an airport pickup, looking forward to meeting SheilaAnn, and I already said I could do it. If that is hell bent, so be it.

I've done the Tabasco Tour and I would do it again, especially since I might have some friends coming with me; waiting for them to commit.

You can stop and park in the Jungle Garden, might be an idea to buy some food in the cafe but get it to go and eat in the garden.

I got to go into the kitchen at K-Paul's, shake his hand, and get his first book signed. He was sitting on a kitchen stool with wheels tending to about 6 huge skillets or roux in different shades of completion. He was a real warm and friendly guy.

Bkhuna That is awesome, I wish I could have met him and I wish that his restaurant was still open; I have never been there. At least we have his cookbooks and a couple of the Louisiana Kitchen videos on youtube. I'm making the gumbo from the video right now, even made the chicken stock a couple of days ago.

I want to ask a question. Not being critical or anything, but why meet up in the heart of Cajun country and do it when crawfish aren't in season?

Good question. Honestly, when planning the MeatUps we try to do them in April & October mainly for the better weather of those months….and to avoid the major holidays like Thanksgiving or Easter. When 58limited and I first talked about doing one in Lafayette we didn’t even discuss crawfish season. It didn’t enter my mind at least. Getting fresh crawfish is commonplace down here, when in season. With the exception of crawfish boils, Lafayette still offers crawfish in meals year round.

I bought a book awhile back, "Bayou", and it remarks that in the fall families carry on the art of boucherie. Late October and early November marks the making of whole-hog cooking, cracklins, boudin, sausages and stews. So you enjoy different Bayou cuisines during different parts for the year. Bayou in the fall is why I'm going.
