Didn't take any photos of the drive, but the final stats were 1114mi on 29.84gal of fuel, trip average 37.3mpg. $3.859/gal in NC and $3.659/gal back in NJ.
Smooth ride on the way home.
We have a diesel Cruze with some exhaust mods, gets about 42mpg on road trips going 80. That seems to be its sweet spot, mpg goes down quickly when you go much faster. It’s been great, it’s been as far west as Vegas and as far east as Orlando.
Well I just got home about 1:15 CST and left Gulfport this morning at 6:20. I am frikkin pooped! Put 2,317 miles on my truck for this trip. On the way back, right outside Lafayette, La. is a little place called The Best Stop, in Scott, La. It’s a small authentic Cajun grocery store that sells almost any kind of Cajun meat, boudin, alligator, you name it. I stopped in and stocked up on a few things. The stuff they sell is the real deal, made by real Cajuns. If we do a Louisiana MeatUp in October, people can stop here and stock up on some Cajun meats and sausages, etc. Here’s a few pics I took, showing just a sampling of what they offer.

Best Stop just opened a dining room also. You can see it in the 2nd pic. But it’s always good to try different places. TxF You mentioned earlier about the rest stop at the foot of the Atchafalaya bridge, I almost pulled in there yesterday. Is it really the nicest one in Louisiana? I hope so, I’ve gotta check it out one day.
It’s the nice little brick one with the white trim, going East I think there’s a short bridge before it and you get on the long one after it. There’s a little museum/gift shop and they have a theater that has 15 or 20 min show about the swamp. It’s pretty nice for a rest stop, and we stop and do the show when we have people who haven’t seen it.
I’ve been trying to justify that 30lbs of uncased Boudin from Best Stop all day, I’m going to need some more back yard accessories. 😎
ofelles and anyone else who might be interested……I just called the Best Stop in Scott and was told they do ship to all 50 states, but alas, not Canada. Your orders are placed in one of 3 sized shipping containers and are packed in dry ice. The shipping charges are determined by the size of container needed to ship your order. It doesn’t matter if the container is full or only has one item in it, the charges are the same regardless, so it’s not determined by weight. They have overnight, 2 or 3 day delivery, as well as ground shipping, which could take 4 or 5 days…..not recommended unless you’re close by. Orders are shipped on Mon, Tue or Wed. All orders placed after Wed would ship the following Monday…[depending on time of day ordered]
58limited I was told they’re opening the Katy location at the end of this summer.
I’m still on my trip and continuing on from the meet up. I’m at my friends house near Savannah, GA. Actually Bluffton, SC. He’s pictured here dialing up his pellet pooper at 7:00 AM. Also pictured are the beef plate ribs that I sent him directly from Wild Fork. They just now came off and are resting for a 6:00 PM EST dinner. Yum.
Panhead John that's a Cuisinart Dual Fuel. It is a pellet cooker on one side and a propane grill on the other. It also has a propane side burner. it's pretty cool and cooks really well. he got at the end of last year as a closeout somewhere for just $500.
Well my trip continues. I am now in the Atlanta area to see another life long friend. He suggested Jamacan food for dinner so of course I said sure. Here’s where he took me. 🙄
To be fair and honest, the food was very good. I had the jerk chicken with rice, cabbage, and plantains. But the ambiance ? Not so much. 🤣. And they had Jamacan music just blasting through a PA system as we ate outside at the picnic tables. All part of the adventure right? 😊
Fake grass is like the food truck/trailer version of hole in the wall... if it's got fake grass the foods usually well above average. I would argue overload music via a PA is VERY authentic for parts of the Carribean and South America. That plate looks to die for
I left Atlanta this morning about 7:30 AM. I’m still not feeling 100% so I decided to cut out the stop in St. Louis and head for home. I did about 560 miles today and about 4:30 PM I saw freeway billboards showing a Hampton Inn and a bbq restaurant at the same exit off I65 north of Indianapolis. BOOM. Hard right! The hotel turned out to be nearly new. The bbq turned out to be just OK. But hey. Right off the interstate in the middle of nowhere (Lebanon, IN?) made it just right.
I had a platter with pulled pork, brisket, and some kind of smoked sausage. Slaw and baked beans were the sides. A couple of Yuengling’s washed it down.
Next stop: home. Should be there around noonish tomorrow. What a trip. BBQ, bbq, and more bbq. Perfect right?
Well just to wrap this up, I made it home safe and sound. Time to settle in and plan my upcoming cooks here!
Many thanks to WayneT and Mary Jo for all they did for the meet up. And many thanks to everyone else for the camaraderie and friendship. I had a terrific time.
While deleting stuff from my phone I realized I hadn’t posted about my return trip. I love driving through the mountains in NC and VA, and the area around Asheville is particularly beautiful. This rest stop was east of Asheville, IIRC.
This gentleman, Kamal, was checking out my car when I finished my walk around. He was quite surprised to see its manual transmission. We talked for about 15 minutes, and it turns out we were both heading west after visiting daughters in Durham, and we both love stick shift Hondas. In case you’re wondering, about 2% of new cars sold in the US in 2018 had manual transmissions.
I wasn’t planning to drive straight through, it just happened. I was north of Indy as the sun was going down, and got home at 10:30 after 14 hours on the road. Once again the southbound traffic north of Indy was bad, but the sunset was nice.
My road trip total was 1,935.2 miles, and about 925 was my return trip last Wednesday.
Bought my first Acura in 2003, a 2001 TL. Loved that car. It had 287k on the clock when we traded it for the 2016 Accord. Mari Jo had a 1996 Accord that had almost 200k on it when she sold it to the kid across the street from us. I have no idea how many miles it has now but he is still driving it. We also owned a 2007 S2000, which I think I told you about. Had a 2007 RDX then traded it for the 2019 RDX 2 years ago. Love Honda products.
WayneT Dangit Wayne, you were too quick! I was out running errands when I remembered the S2000, and was hoping I could edit it before you saw it 😩.
Ditto on the Honda love - I’ve been driving them since 1985. Vickie and I are on #’s 7 and 8, and we’ve always had at least one except for a brief dalliance with an Audi that she hated and still holds a grudge about. All our kids drive them, three brothers drive them, I turned my in-laws on to them. They should put us in a commercial.
Sid P I also meant to mention to you, that Honda has an aircraft production facility in Greensboro, NC. They make the over-the-wing-mounted engine jets there.
