WayneT I don't think I've had anything in my packs from them in a while. I kept some interesting stuff like Bojangles Hard Sweet Tea for my wife and some Japanese lagers. My local brewery is Goldsboro Brew Works, they have some great stuff but other than kegs I'm not sure they distribute yet.

I found this restaurant right around the corner from my hotel, less than 1/2 mile…Old Hickory House. It sounded like it might be good and they got pretty good online reviews. It’s an old fashion southern style cooking place that also sells BBQ. I went ahead of me eating there, to pick up a menu and also just to kill some time….gets pretty boring sitting in a hotel room by yourself. The place smelled great and I was looking forward to trying it out. I could definitely smell BBQ smoke inside and out of the restaurant. Checked out back and there was no wood or smokers in sight, not a problem though, I knew there was some wood burning somewhere. Grabbed a menu and went back to the room.
After perusing through the the menu [I’ve always wanted to use the word perusing] 😂 I was gonna get a BBQ plate that they call “People Pleaser”. It’s described as …sliced barbecue pork, beef and ribs. ??? Ok I thought, I’ll just ask em when I get back to the restaurant.
I went back to the restaurant ready to eat and ask a few questions. Let’s just say things didn’t go very smooth and I almost walked out before ordering! Here’s what happened. When I first go in I walk up to the counter where a lady asked me if I was gonna eat there or is it to go. I said I’m gonna eat here and she says “ok, have a seat there [in a waiting area] and someone will seat you shortly.” I thought this was weird because the place had plenty of empty booths where I could have sat. After almost 5 minutes of no one seating me I walked up and said “ can I just sit in one of those booths there…pointing. She said sure…WTF! Why didn’t you just tell me that earlier I thought?!?! After the waitress hands me the menu I start asking her about the BBQ platter they call People Pleaser.
I asked her what kind or cut of pork is the “sliced BBQ pork” and what is the “beef”….she couldn’t answer me…🙄 I asked her if the beef was brisket and she said No, I know it’s not brisket, that’s what we tell everyone” After pressing her a little more about the pork and what kind of beef it was she said ….just a minute and I’ll see. Are you f’ing kidding me? Anyway she just came back after talking to someone and said “it’s just BBQ beef and sliced pork”. OMG! What is wrong with a place that can’t even answer a simple and easy question like that! I was ready to just leave but decided I’d try their catfish platter, I knew that shouldn’t contain any mystery meat. 🙄
The catfish platter was great! It came with 2 catfish filets, 2 hush puppies, fries and a really good cole slaw! The catfish was perfectly fried and came to me piping hot and had a perfect golden color. The hush puppies were excellent also and didn’t taste frozen, but made fresh from scratch. I could tell that all the customers I saw were probably regulars, so that was a good sign the food was gonna be good. When I first saw the place and went inside, I had a feeling this was gonna be a good place for down home, good old Southern cooking and it was! They just need to work on their transparency…….
The Mystery Meat People Pleaser….🙄

This might be the ugliest building in Indiana. It’s part of the Lebanon rest stop and the only thing in there is vending machines.
The truckers know the good places. The second rest stop south of Gary was deserted despite the heavy traffic, looked like it was built in the 50’s, and stunk bad.
Twenty miles south was the much newer rest stop I mentioned above, and the truck parking was overflowing.

I of course love smoked meats of all kinds, but also like quick cooks like chicken portions, pork tenderloins, steak and fish. Really into cooking of all kinds.
My outdoor kitchen has a Lone Star Grillz Adjustable and it is wonderful. There also is a Pit Boss 5 Burner Ultimate Griddle and a Pit Boss Copperhead pellet grill.
There is an outdoor fire pit that has grilling capability and limited Santa Maria-style grill raising and lowering.

Favorite beer: Anything that's cold!
Favorite cocktail: Bourbon neat
Well I am loaded and ready to roll. I’ll sip another cup of coffee before leaving to allow the Chicago rush hour traffic to pass a little bit. If I leave around 8:00, I hit there about 9:30 and things are beginning to calm somewhat.
Sid P said above that I65 was a disaster. I’m going through there according to google maps. Hmmm. May need an alternate route. 🤷♂️
Anyway, as CaptainMike said, Tally Ho!
See you all Friday. 👍🤞

I AM HERE! Damn, finally made it, about 1,150 miles later. I’m having lunch across from the Hampton Inn at…….Applebees! Don’t laugh too hard, I was tired and wanted something close. But, they served me a pretty darn good mushroom Swiss burger, not bad at all! Kinda small though for a $17.10 meal w/Dr. Pepper…….before tip.

What was the drive time.
We used to go to Charlotte for the races and Myrtle beach years ago, I believe the drive time.es were 12 hours and 15 hours thereabouts nonstop.
Now it's fly it or forget it.
