Release Day: New Hasty Bake Roughneck Powder Coat

New version of the roughneck up for pre order today. I’m partial to the stainless steel version and hope to add one next year but for those not worried about moisture as much this powder cost version could fit the bill!

My Gourmet 256, with the bottom powder coated, and the top stainless, has stood up remarkably well to the Pacific Northwest. It’s 13 years old now and has just two rust spots that I needed to deal with for the first time this summer. I wouldn’t hesitate to get the Roughneck in a powder coated version.

ecowper That’s very impressive! A powder coat roughneck sounds like it would match your gourmet about perfectly 😉. I’m about 1/4 mile from the waters of the sound so I always worry about salt and corrosion a little more than I ought to.

PNWBrandon I live in one of the heaviest storm tracks on the West side. I get about 70” of rain annually. I honestly expected to be dealing with rust routinely. I’ve been very happy with how the Gourmet deals with the weather.

I believe that's the Cowboy Kent Rollins cooker there.

For those less familiar with this cooker, the first version was/is produced in Corten steel. Corten is an architectural material that is intended to take on a surface rust finish that supposedly inhibits further rusting that might "eat through" the material. The second version recently released was done in stainless steel, and priced accordingly. Now this one in powder coat. I suspect that there are folks who just don't care for the rusted look no matter it's appeal to some, but would like to try one of these without the cost of SS.

I got a first generation unit and it performs reasonably well as a "barrel" cooker. It's square format gives some added cooking space. It can be used as a "direct cooker" with some fiddling, and it is a good design in general, though not earth shattering. My biggest complaint was the lack of protective packaging for their chosen method of shipping (FedEx). I have tools and skills to repair the shipping damage mine was subjected to, but I suspect most buyers aren't that well equipped. Yes, many claim no shipping damage, but that's just a matter of luck from my POV.

Uncle Bob what great insight! Have you done any long/overnight cooks on it yet? I’ve been eyeing these since the original was released but afraid the overlap with my current hasty bakes may be too similar.

PNWBrandon I have not done overnight, I generally don't do those regardless of equipment. I'd rather get up very early and cook all day (probably the control freak in me). The fuel basket is pretty big, so a well formed snake would probably be a good method for that. Most of my smokes are 8-10 hours, tops, so I've actually used fire bricks to make the fire bed more compact/deep for the sake of coal development.
