My friend is exploring the possibility of putting a controller on his Hasty Bake. Anyone have either experience or advice to share?

I have not done this. The way that the HB is set up, you can't easily attach to the air vents on the door. Instead, i think you would have to keep those vents closed and cut a hole in the door for your controller. Since the door is double walled, you'd need to go through both and then install a bit of pipe/conduit in the hole in order to get the controller's air flow to work correctly.
Personally, I've never really felt the need for a controller.

I don't have experience but I saw that Fire & Water Cooking installed a BBQ Guru UltraQ on a Gourmet 257 a few years ago. Looks like he had to drill a hole next to the vents and install an adapter ecowper stated above.

- If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
I think BBQGuru would sell an adapter that would work in the door next to the vents. He can cap it with a silicone plug when not using a fan, and use the vents instead.
BBQGuru.com says THIS is the adapter that will work with all Hasty Bake models:
It's the one size fits all inducer. The Bulkhead Inducer can be mounted onto almost any cooker. The inducer will fit through insulated walls up to 2-1/8”: thick or as thin as 1/8” thick.
