Fun Hasty Bake and Backyard Grilling/Smoking History Article

Found this neat article while digging around online. It is crazy to me to think how long cooking with fire existed before we put a lid over it and made smokers/bbqs/grills a backyard staple. Even crazier how minimally their design has changed over the last 75 years! Would love to find one of those crazy one-offs one day. Hope y’all enjoy the read as much as I did.

The Origins of Hasty Bake and How it Cooked Up America's Pastime of Back Yard Grilling Grill It And They Will Come "Smoke 'em if you've got 'em." "Kill it and we'll grill it." "You choke it and we'll smoke it." These are great slogans to kick off an article pertaining to backyard grilling such [...]

Hasty-Bake makes great products and truly does have a cult-like following. Unfortunately, they still seem to be less known outside of the midwest/southwest areas. I had never heard of them until we moved to the Tulsa area. Now I see them everywhere and several popular restaurants around here use them and feature HB in their restaurant advertising.

Agreed! It took me a while of hanging out on forums to hear about them. Sort of worked to my advantage in purchasing my Hasty Bake second hand out here. Ended up picking a hardly used legacy 132 for around $300!

Great article of the history of Hasty Bake. I’m part of the cult, and there were things in there I didn’t know!

Thanks for sharing! I have a HB as well. It was a struggle at first to learn how to use this cooker, but I really like it now that I've figured it out.

I enjoyed reading that. That is the spirit of America, first with Hastings and Baker, then Hastings, now with Alexander. For most of us, this is what entenpreneurship means.

I could not help but notice that HB is selling a limited edition 75 years anniversary grill. Only 75 available.

Wow, great price for that honestly. The Legacy is $1299. If I didn’t have the Gourmet 256 I’d be buying this :-)

There is a Hasty Bake Continental 83 for sale a couple hours drive from me, for $200. It looks a little beat, to be honest, but probably not unsaveable. But even as a deal, I don’t need another cooker.

This is the worst of it. If you think there’s no problem, maybe I’ll make an offer.

Would definitely need some work on the rust, but very salvageable.

Did you end up putting an offer on this unit?

PNWBrandon Nope. I really don’t need anything, and I have nowhere to put anything anyhow. The food will taste the same, and I would have to either get rid of one of my current units, or put any new unit at the bottom of the steps to the deck, and I’m not going to walk up and down a dozen steps to make bbq! But yeah, I certainly thought about it.

Fair enough! I’m traveling out of town next weekend and there is a decent continental available nearby. It is the full stainless 84 model and has rotisserie kit that would work on my legacy as well. Price for everything is almost as good as the rotisserie alone so I am tempted to add one to the collection although I certainly do not need it either! May just have to pick it up, take to rotisserie and gift the grill it to family.
