Operation BBQ Relief - Hurricane Harvey

    8/25/2017 Just a PSA...

Folks now is a great time if you can find it in your hearts to give a little something preemptively to help OBR prepare for the work ahead of them for the good people in TX & LA who are soon to be affected in the coming days by not only the winds but the devastating rains/flooding they're predicting from Hurricane Harvey. For more on OBR, what they do, and to offer some help if you're able, visit this link: http://amazingribs.com/BBQ_articles/...ue_relief.html

OBR is at 401 West Dallas St, in downtown Houston if anyone wants to stop in.

To see what OBR (and you!) were able to accomplish in 2016, see this post: https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...ub-memberships

Also, when you shop on Amazon, if you add "smile." in place of the "www." and make it "smile.amazon.com" you can select any number charities to give a portion of your purchase to, and this does not affect your price at all. OBR is one of the charities. Any item on Amazon is also on smile.Amazon, and this gives 0.5% of your purchase to a charity of your choice, every time. It ONLY works if you use smile.amazon.com though. Please, if you can consider giving a couple pennies of your purchase to OBR, you're helping deliver not only meals, but Grade-A BBQ meals to those who truly need it most.

    9/5/2017 UPDATE
Partners, Sponsors, and Supporters, (this is being sent as a BCC but intended for you)

Day 6 was our biggest day ever on deployment! It was a day of many firsts.
    • We delivered needed items to Victoria, TX via single wing plane from Houston (a 30 minute flight vs. 3.5 hour 1 way drive)
    • Humanitarian product and side meal items loaded on a Chinook helicopter sending side items for hot meals to to Beaumont.
    • Protein for 6000 meals went out on a Blackhawk helicopter last night.

Some pictures are at the bottom. You can find a video of us of loading the Blackhawk Helicopter on our FB page (LINK)

At the time of writing this email, our lunch rush will send out 23,850 hot BBQ meals and have orders of just over 16,800 for dinner just in Houston. In the Victoria/Rockport area, they are on pace to do 8,000 meals today. That will put us around 48,000 meals today which would make this the most meals we have done in one day (for the 4th time in the last 7 days).

Our 6 day total is 201,825 hot bbq meals. See detail below:
    Meal Count -
    Day 1 - 16,090
    Day 2 - 23,625
    Day 3 - 43,200
    Day 4 - 43,350
    Day 5 - 29,800
    Day 6 - 45,760 (6000 Silsbee/Beaumont, 8000 Victoria/Rockport and 31,760 in Great Houston area)
    Total 201,825
Statistics on what it took to put out 201,825 meals:
    · 86,250 pounds of raw pork
    · 10,091 #10 cans of vegetables
    · 6,728 full-size aluminum pans and lids

Without the support of everyone on this email, we could not do this! Click Here for our Sponsors/Partners

Every one of you are helping us do great things! We do need help still through the weekend. Monetary donations and volunteers are needed. Please share our social media posts as often as you can!

Partner, Sponsors and Key Supporters you are receiving this as a BCC but intended for you!

Good evening everyone! Today (August 30th) was our first day of feeding in Houston. Our volunteers served 12,000 hot bbq meals to those affected and first responders. We had 60 volunteers that helped make that happen.

We are prepared to ramp up food production to 25,000 hot bbq meals by Friday. We could not do this with out our sponsors and donors. From our team to yours we would like to thank all of you for your support.

The last couple of days I have been live streaming on FB both my personal page and the OBR page. I hope you take the time to go check them out so you can see what the OBR set up looks like.

The rain continues in Houston and the flooding is historic. Most of the major roadways are still unpassable in town. High water rescue vehicles and boats are the only way to get around in Houston right now. We are rolling into Spring TX this morning to stage equipment. We are working with officials from the City of Houston and will be looking for a location that we can support the community and first responders with hot bbq meals!

We generally try to be on site after disasters strike however this one is still happening and we are having to be patient and wait to ensure the safety of our volunteers.

I left KC yesterday morning pulling our trailer loaded with supplies and coolers loaded with 1000 lbs of pork so we can start cooking once we have a location. We have proteins that will be in route today to Houston and more supplies in the works for this week. We will ramp up equipment, supplies and volunteers by next weekend. We will have the capacity to cook up to 25,000 meals a day! We are ready to get cooking and helping provide hot bbq meals to those in need!

Here are a couple of pictures of our truck and trailer that I am driving down.

Once I have more information I will update everyone! Thank you for your support!

Partners, Sponsors and Key Supporters you are receiving this as a BCC but intended for you.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall very early this morning just east of Corpus Christi as a Category 4 Hurricane. The last Category 4 to make landfall in the US was in 2004 and the first Category 4 in Texas since 1961. Over the next several days the flooding could be devastating as Harvey is already stalling early this morning near Victoria, TX where that area could get 30 inches of rain.

OBR Teams from Memphis, Kansas City, Shreveport, and Austin will be loading supplies and preparing trailers to respond to the needs created from Harvey. We will be leaving these locations on Sunday heading to Texas and staging near Austin until we have a location and it is safe for our teams to proceed. We do not know what the need will be, but we are prepared to serve 10,000+ hot bbq meals a day.

We could use your help. This will be a major deployment for us potentially lasting a couple of weeks. Here are 3 things we need

1 - We will need donations both monetary as well as product. Here is a small list of products we will need once we get into location:

Protein (Pork butt, pork loin, turkey, etc.)
    Bread (buns and loaves)
#10 cans of corn and green beans
2 - We will need volunteers once it is safe for an extended period 7-14 days. We are asking volunteers to register on our website or download our new OBR Volunteer App that can be downloaded for iPhone from iTunes and Android from Google Play. <Volunteer App Link>

3 - Lastly, share our social media with your followers. We are posting primarily on FB but have Twitter and Instagram that we use as well.

    TWITTER Link

We will keep you updated on our status as we deploy to Texas. If you have questions feel free to email me Stan Hays at [email protected] or Will Cleaver at [email protected].

I live in one of the areas in SE Texas that will be effected by rains. I will be okay. We had some floods last year that wiped some people out whole communities were flooded. I would like to thank you ahead of time for doing this for the areas that will possibly effected by rain and winds.

I'm just wondering, who all here is in the damage path of Harvey? MAybe if there were names attached to the carnage, it would be a little easier to donate to some, rather than just a charity.

Man, that is no fun to be in a strong hurricane. I have never been tireder than when we evacuated for Hurricane Rita in 2005. Rita was a major Hurricane, and it landed just to the west of my home. I live about 30 miles from the Coast. Some 4,200 homes were destroyed. LOTS of water. Homes had water in them from the storm surge just a couple miles south of my home.

Donate to OBR, they will be busy for the next month as the lives of those right around the center of the storm will be quite disrupted for the next month. I'm clicking on Huskee 's link above and making my first contribution now. Maybe I'll volunteer and go down there and cook, too.

We will see how it goes. What a giant problem in the Houston area! I'm still nursing this knee, and my Dr Appt got postponed due to the storm. I'm concerned I might not be up for 15+ hour hard work days until this knee gets better. I'll know more soon.

Huskee thanks for posting! After volunteering with OBR last year following the massive flooding in West Virginia, I've seen first hand what a difference OBR makes in victims lives. After a tragedy, it's amazing how much a hot meal means to people. Many of the meals we made were delivered by The Salvation Army to remote areas devastated by floods. The drivers would come back and tell us how people would tear up at receiving a BBQ meal or how kids would cheer when the truck drove up. However, I feel that I got back way more than I gave as an OBR volunteer. The genuine appreciation shared by the flood victims was amazing. I highly encourage folks to contribute in any small way they can. OBR truly makes a difference.

I just thought I'd mention, over at smile.amazon.com, you can set it up so that a portion of every purchase you make at Amazon goes to a charity of your choice. And one of the charities they have there is Operation BBQ Relief.

So in addition to donating directly, if you want a passive way to help them now and throughout the year, you can set it up so that they're getting some help each time you buy goodies at Amazon :-)
                  -Eric

Update: Shoot, I re-read Huskee's post above and realize he said the same thing. Oh well I guess it doesn't hurt to mention it again :-)
