BEWARE of fishy new members in The Pit, asking oddly specific questions and PM'ing you!

    Friends,

We're aware that recently a rather new trend (here) has been happening in which brand new members, often with zero posts, pretend to be an interested-in-BBQ-&-grilling new member. Some post topics and ask repeated questions, despite getting answers to said questions. Often they will PM you if you reply in the topic, repeating the same or a similar question for more info from you.

    PLEASE IGNORE THESE!

It is rather obvious that they are either: A) bots, B), bots in training, C) humans trying to masquerade as legit members but simply mining for data to create bots, D) perhaps mining for data on how to make yet another knockoff device, or E) copying an pasting our responses somewhere. Perhaps they are some combo of all of these, who knows.

We're in the process of discussing as a team how best to handle these 'members'. We've even seen one today who actually paid, surely in an effort to head off quick banning of being marked as a Trial Member, their usual MO.

Some things we've noticed, but that they will surely change and adapt out of, are using the name "huang" (Chinese surname), often broken English or otherwise suspicious language, and repeated oddly specific questions like "I want to help my husband grill delicious food, which is better charcoal or pellets to help his grilling be more delicious", or "I would like to make a better camping grill, what are some designs that you think would make a delicious camp grill".

Of course it's not limited to this specifically, but this is what we've seen so far, so I'm sure you get the idea.

Again, PLEASE IGNORE POSTS OR PMs FROM these 'members'. Usually it is obvious if a new member is legit or suspicious, so go with your gut until mods & admin can investigate and remove them properly.

    Thanks!

If these are humans behind the curtain, then surely they will adapt their tactics after reading my above warning, so as to be even sneakier and avoid detection long enough to get what they want.

Therefore, ignoring is the single best way to waste their time.

Poke a stick through 'dillo and rotate slowly on hot pavement, until desired doneness.

Geez Huskee, just teasing! The thing that gets me about these is - what do they gain? Is their eventual goal to have someone give up Panhead John's personal info?

I must admit I thought Panhead John was a bot years ago…..

I’ve seen these here and on FB, they really are not that sneaky. But I imagine they are harder to filter out on the membership side.

The fact that they've now paid tells me they understand the rules here, which means they're putting in some due diligence, aka being sneakier. Reverse spamming.

They've been showing up on Nextdoor as well. I founded my neighborhood's site in 2015, so I have some small amount of admin rights. The latest one was really good. The others seemed to be bots, but this one was most likely human, because they started deleting their own fishy posts when I began warning others.

We had a rash of these a year or so ago. I guess the mods have sharpened their skills on rooting them out.

One of their tricks was to reply to an old post with a question or a comment, as Huskee pointed out

That was simply spamming, this stuff we're addressing here is way different.

These are different. This is the first time I have seen one ask a question, then another one answer it in a spammy way just a minute later. I've had them sending me private messages on Nextdoor, asking a lot of questions out of the blue, just like Huskee described here. I stump them with the simplest questions in reply, then I don't hear from them again.

Holy smoke. I'm in trouble. Posted today on thread with last activity in May. In the future, if asked to confirm that I am not a bot, what do I do?

More seriously, a major attribute of this site is that it is well organized, curated, and moderated.

oh come on, I can't engage with them and waste their time on ridiculous responses and questions? :-(

I'm here for it, ecowper! I enjoy messing with them, probably more than any sane person should. But I justify it by telling myself I'm keeping them occupied so they can't scam an unsuspecting person. I think I was on the verge once of convincing a Craigslist scammer to let me join forces with him/her.

I am on another forum daily for Chevrolet owners (my two trucks), and they have recently been hit almost every other day with mega spam posts, to where it makes the forum "New Posts" feature over there useless some days, as there are 50 new topics from the bots...

I feel that it is managed much better here, and there are fewer of them, so at least its harder to sign up and start posting.

jfmorris methinks it's from the tireless efforts of megagods like Huskee and all the other moderators that actually give a crap here and keep all of of us little goldfish safe.

My line of work involves defending against these. Many of these are the beginnings of romance scams and they are getting increasingly sophisticated. AI is certainly helping the scammers out as well as the scammers becoming more and more patient.

Sadly, these scams are quite lucrative as there are a lot of lonely people out there who are falling for them.

A few weeks ago I actually was able to read an English translation of a romance scam "playbook." It was utterly fascinating. They specifically target stereotypical American male interests: food/grilling, obviously, and as jfmorris pointed out, trucks and cars.

        Wild stuff.

Oak Smoke One thing that I admire about the administration of this site is that the admins do a very, very good job with website and database security. They have purposefully -- ever since I joined five years ago -- made it essentially impossible to discover your credit card number. It simply isn't stored in the database; you'd have to compromise the payment processor, Stripe.

(And if Stripe gets compromised.....half of all internet e-commerce is having a very bad day lol.)
