    E6 vs earlier version?

Are there any negatives on picking up the old version of the E6 if the price is right? I don’t want the gas, and the hinged part of the heat deflector leaves me cold. I kinda want the 3 castors too. In short, I like the E6 version better. But are there any reasons I should not get the older version if I get a good deal one one in good condition?

Aside from the reasons you list above I don’t think there are any other differences between them but it’s nothing that I would call a dealbreaker. I agree that I’d rather have the solid deflector as hinged just isn’t necessary. As for the gas starter I could make due just fine without it. I don’t think there’s anything particularly wrong with the WSCG and I’m sure you’d be happy with either. I'd add that depending on if it’s used or not I’d take the warranty into consideration as I’d rather pay a little more for an E6 with a warranty than an original without one.

I like the hinged deflector, it is heavier than the new ones. I am very happy with my original WSCG. I have the cart model. I rarely use the gas. I'd say warranty is the only reason not to get the older WSCG. If you like the E6 better, and it sounds like you do, get that and be done. I like new better than used. If both were new and I had a choice I'd buy the older version.

I am thinking that the idea of the hinged deflector is to give you the ability to add wood chunks or fuel to the fire during kamado style cooking. I in fact saw Steven Raichlen do exactly that when cooking on a Weber Summit charcoal grill on an episode of Project Fire - he added some wood just before he put food on the grate, and flipped the deflector up with his tongs to do so.

I have a Performer with the propane ignition, and I absolutely love it, as I never, ever have to worry with fire starters, lighters, etc, with that grill. It does a great job of getting a chimney going in 3-5 minutes, and could easily be used to light a bed of charcoal in kamado mode even if you didn't use the chimney. I've used the Performer to light chimneys for my other grills many times in fact. I can't tell you how many times, using Weber starter cubes or Royal Oak tumbleweeds on the kamado, that the fire has gone out and I had to use more starter cubes to get it going, 20 minutes after I thought it was lit.

I have the OG WSCGC and love it. I enjoy having the table attached (making it a WSCGC vs. a WSCG) for its convenience, sturdiness, and storage features. For sure the original table has nicer features than the table that is available in the newer WSCGCs.

I have on a few occasions, taken advantage of the hinged feature on the heat deflector, but not having it would probably not bother me. I do like the double stainless steel walled design of original heat deflector but since I've never used the newer single layer "holey" design, I can't really say if there's a difference.

I really like the storage option for the heat deflector on the WSCGC : it slides into a slot under the table's lower shelf. Not so with the newer Summit models with table attached.

I have surprised myself by using the SnapJet ignition with every kamado mode cook. It's so simple! It's one of those things that you don't appreciate until you use it once. Then you're hooked. Or at least I was.

Whichever Weber model you go with, original or newer, you're going to love having the versatility of a kettle and a kamado all in one. When I was considering going with the Weber Summit Charcoal Grilling Center vs. a traditional ceramic kamado , I liked the fact that the WSCGC did not have the weight, temperature control, or breakage concerns that can sometimes bedevil ceramic kamados.

In use, the original WSCGC has been a dream of a cooker. I wouldn't change a single thing.

I’ve already decided that this will be my next cooker purchase in a few years. I’m still loving my recently purchased kettle.

I’ll buy the E6 because I don’t have the space for a table nor a use for the starter. I sometimes use the Weber cubes but I’ve been using the side burner on my genesis to start my chimney and it’s awesome. So I can see why have the starter could be a game changer because it’s convenient and almost full proof. Not to mention but I think the Weber cubes and tumbleweeds are also messy every time I take them out the package.

I never use the starter on my WSCG. Moving it around is still pretty easy with just the one caster. If they were both out when I got mine, I would have picked the E6. If you find a WSCG for the right price you can always buy the new style deflector from Weber.

Update: I missed out on the older version. I made an offer, and someone else was willing to pay the asking price. Cool deal!

This morning my business partners gifted me a gift card that was enough to pay for well over half of an E6. So it's ordered. Woohoo!!!
