Funny, I think I read that in Mexico, tacos are not (or WERE not) served with cheese. Then this was 'adopted' due to American tastes and now a lot of places do add cheese to their tacos, but traditional Mexican homes and taquerias do not. I think the Oaxaca or cotija cheeses are definitely more acceptable in this situation.

barelfly onion and cilantro, maybe some wedges of lime in the basket, are what I get here from the taco food trucks.

Sour cream? How’s about sour cream? That’s what I use to hold everything in place.

Who gives a rip, LETS EAT!!!
Taco is a taco. A sandwich is a sandwich. A gyro is a gyro. An open faced whatever is an open faced whatever. A Reese’s Pieces is a Reese’s Pieces. A cup of water half full or empty is neither, just too big of a cup. The earth is round, ish, not to be confused with perfectly round to those in Oconomowoc. Is there anything else anybody wants to know, google it. Or, check with Mary Ann Webster. Yessir.

Personally, I think if there is a questionable call on what is a sandwich, it would be the so called "open face sandwich". It's just stuff on top of bread. You can't pick it up (unless you want a really messy experience). I've never understood the concept of open faced sandwiches.

On nights in the 70's when my mom was working at the hospital and didn't leave us something to eat, my dad would make some gravy with chipped beef, put it on top of toast, and call it "s%?! on a shingle", and we loved it. We didn't call it a sandwich though! In the same manner, if we had sloppy joes on a bun, that was a sandwich. Sloppy Joe stuff over bread on a plate? Not a sandwich....

Tacos rule, and are tacos. Sandwiches are sandwiches but I think require bread and the ability to pick it up to eat it...

Hot turkey and roast beef sammiches don't really have the ability to pick them up to eat them. Just saying ...

Would you rather take the insides of a sandwich and put them in a taco shell, or take the insides of a taco and put them between two slices of bread?

I haven't had time to read all of the replies but one thing that comes to mind: does it matter if the bread is leavened (like what most of us make sandwiches with) or not? I can argue that tortillas, na'an, pita etc are flat breads but are still breads. But I personally differentiate them. sourdough or yeast types of bread that rise when baked are for sandwiches. Flat breads are for tacos, wraps, etc. but there is a very gray line here.

My personal opinion, NO. A taco is definitely not a sandwhich. That takes away the history of the taco as a distinct food item.

AND, technically, a taco is NOT a sandwhich, well, at least according to the Merriam-Webster.

        Merriam-Webster definition -

        sandwich
        1 of 2 noun

        sand·wich ˈsan(d)-ˌwich
        ˈsam-;

        dialectal ˈsaŋ-
        Synonyms of sandwich

        1. a: two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between

b: one slice of bread covered with food
Have an open-faced sandwich, with one slice of bread instead of two, mustard instead of butter, and some vegetable sticks to munch on.—Your Health & Fitness

        2: something resembling a sandwich
especially : composite structural material consisting of layers often of high-strength facings bonded to a low strength central core

two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between; one slice of bread covered with food… See the full definition

Using this description, a split roll having a filling, a hotdog is a sandwich. I believe a torta is a Mexican sandwich. We could have another poll for dumplings. Seems like everybody has a form of a dumpling.

OK, so I went totally Oxford (dictionary) on this, a sandwich is "an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal." A taco is "a Mexican dish consisting of a fried tortilla, typically folded, filled with various mixtures, such as seasoned meat, beans, lettuce, and tomatoes."

According to the T-shirt randomly seen by myself on a Delta flight, worn by the taco gal from some texan restaurant "If it's shaped like a taco, it's meant to be eaten."
