My wife likes Utz Wavy Chips. I like Cape Cod BBQ and White Cheddar. The boy hasn't met a chip he doesn't like but is a big Cool Ranch Doritos fan, oh and Goldfish crackers.
When our son was around 3 YO we were in the Outer Banks of NC, (with 3 other couples and 7 kids total and ours the oldest). There was a small potato chip factory there that had tours so we took the kids. What we saw was a hopper with 50 - 100 lbs, (?), of washed potatoes in it that was suspended over a large vat of hot oil. As the hopper opened to drop the potatoes in the oil, blades started spinning and cut the potatoes into thin slices. Paddles in the oil slowly moved the slices to the opposite end where they were caught on a conveyor belt that removed them from the oil as they finished cooking. They were then salted, cooled, and bagged. It was interesting to watch, but not one of the young kids paid much attention.
Utz regular is my favorite with Ruffles my choice when there is a dip.
I generally prefer corn chips, but as for potato, Old Dutch Garlic & Onion are my favorites, though hard to find, and Lay's Classic for a traditional unflavored chip.
Surprisingly I am the only one in the household that craves potato chips.
Husband will only eat them on a bologna sandwich.
I did edit to include. Husband also loves potato chips crumbled into ice cream. He claims they give it a salty crunchy texture that takes it beyond good.
Let’s first get one thing out of the way. These were the best "Potato Chips" ever created!
I know little elves in little trees used their special elf magic to conjure up this delicious treat using unnatural ways but damn they were good.
Now if you have some chip dip there is no better than these in my opinion.
Always tasty, holds up to dip incredibly well, just the right amount of salt and crunch
Now for my picks for speciality chips
Love the flavor of these. They also give you great dragon breath so when you breath on your significant other it might make them gag a bit.
These are my "dark" horse favorite. Crunchy, delicious and almost taste burnt but not quite. It’s like a whole bag of those slightly burnt chips you find one or two of in a normal bag.
This is just a list of chips made with potatoes. If you move to corn or other grains that’s a whole different list.
The ingredients are only potatoes, fat, and salt -- no preservatives -- so we've learned to store 'em in the fridge especially in summertime to keep them as fresh tasting as possible.
They had to change the fat used to cook the chips in 2018 to comply with government regs, and you could really taste the difference. They did a lot of tweaking and finally got the flavor back on track. https://www.potatopro.com/news/2018/...-reformulation
STEbbq -- Yep, that works too. Finding Sterzings in NE Iowa is a bit of a hit 'n miss proposition. We usually buy a few bags whenever we find them and put them in the freezer if we have room. My husband is from Keokuk (extreme SE Iowa) so he grew up on Sterzings.

If we’re talking the ubiquitous Ruffles vs Lays I’ll choose Ruffles every time. The ONLY reason I ever eat potato chips at home is if there’s onion dip, and you can’t dip a Lays chip!
The only other time I eat chips is when I grab a sub sandwich, in which case it’s Mrs Vickie’s kettle cooked sea salt and vinegar.
I imagine those salt and vinegar kettle chips would hold up ok with dip, but I’ve never seen them anywhere other than the little bags at sandwich shops.
Now in my family if you say "chips" it means tortilla chips. If anyone adds chips to the shopping list a bag of Juanita’s will be coming home. If you want the stuff in this thread it must be labeled "Chips Potato" and if you don’t specify a brand or flavor it’s gonna be Ruffles.
