Update on Chili Garden in 2021

I had a older thread on this but it is now a recipe only forum.

Ordered raised planter box today and we are going to do hatch chilis and Prik Kee Noo Suan chilis. One mild pepper and one with some kick so we have something for all occasions and can maybe do some Thai curries too. Looks like planting season begins indoors in early March here so looking forward to it.

Looks like the seeds are readily available so we will just order from Amazon or a reasonably priced seed place when the time comes.

My wife is going to plant a bunch of other things but these will be our peppers.

I'm thinking of doing this, too. I've always wanted a chili garden of sorts, but never did it as I didn't think the chilis would grow fast enough for me to use. We did a jalapeno and cayanne experiment back in March. Wow. Once those plants got established, they grow 'em! (And still are....and it's November.)

I need to get more serious about this. Love the fresh peppers.

I've got Joe Parker, Jimmy Nardello, Cowhorn, and Roulette heatless Habañero started in the greenhouse. I'm waiting on a bunch of seeds from Fatelli seeds in Finland, those are taking forever to get here. Hopefully they get here soon, I want to get the super hot varieties started.

I have never heard of any of those. They sound good though!

Dammit! They’re chilEs. There is no "I" when referring to the fruit. Chili is a stew that Texans believe doesn’t have beans (they’re wrong), ChileE! ;<)

Try to get a little space between them. Chile’s are notorious for cross pollinating. I’ve need up with spicy bells and mild Serranos!

Santamarina , that's a good idea. Do I need dividers of some sort, or should I put them at opposite ends of the garden? Any worries about cross-pollinating with whatever my wife plants?

I like to space them out physically in different containers. Can’t recall what distance actually worked...these days all I grow are serranos for salsa!

Never had them cross pollinate with another type of veggie...no spicy cucumbers or broccoli.

Cross breeding is NOT a problem because the only thing that gets crossed is the seeds themselves (the embryo). The fruit of the cross is not affected. A jalapeno that is pollinated by a bell will still produce jalapeno fruit--it's the seeds that will not produce another jalapeno. As a matter of fact, those seeds will produce "somethings" (yes, plural) "unknown" and will indeed be a cross. Same with squash, maters, etc... Not so with beans/peas/corn because the seeds are what we eat.

OK, so despite the fact that this self-proclaimed guru doesn't know how to spell chilE, his site is a darned good source of recipes: https://www.chilipeppermadness.com/

So, the original hatch and Thai peppers mostly did not make it but we bought some new Thai pepper and Serrano (maybe poblano?) pepper plants that did better.

                Now, what to cook?
