Just to be sure, I took it to the mushroom guy at the farmers market this morning, his eyes bugged out at how big and how dense it was, at just the perfect stage. It’s about the size of a volleyball, and weighs a little over a pound!

Im going to clean it off and pan roast it with some onion and garlic, and freeze it for use in eggs and stir frys.

I'm sure it's safe to eat . But if not, RIP.....

I hope it's safe. My primary knowledge of wild mushroom type thingies is beware the white ones. It sure does not look like the classic Amanita "death cap", but I'm still a little worried...

It looks as if something has been gnawing on it, If you do not find any carcasses nearby, Ima say gourd head.

That big chunk was right next to it. I’m just going to cut off about an inch around that, and wash the whole thing thoroughly. The guy I asked is this guy, Ben Pypiak. https://www.thegreenmycofarm.com

Never heard of a Puffball mushroom before. Pretty cool that you got that for free from your front yard and that you have a mushroom guy to go to for safety. 👍

The mushroom guy is the key.

We also have found them the size of a soccer ball. Wife has sauteed them in butter. My mushroom guru has told us that you can't freeze them. Normally with mushrooms we dehydrate then freeze but not theses. He has said just enjoy them fresh that day. I don't remember why you can't freeze, they may turn to mush. Really cool to find one of those giants.

                That thing scares me.

Good thing you have a go-to expert on hand.

I was trying to figure out why there is a big chunk out of it; that piece was right next to it. Woodland creatures don’t generally eat mushrooms, and that piece wasn’t eaten. I figure that a deer probably kicked it. I’ll make sure to trim the top layer off all around, and clean it thoroughly.

Whatever. Ben (the mushroom guy) said that it will last a week or more if kept in a paper bag in the refrigerator. I had some golden oysters this morning, I’ll shave some puffball tomorrow.
