    Corn STAND season

A lot of corn states have the stands set up on the edges of the fields. PA is no exception!

I was on my way to get my tires rotated this morning, and I passed one of the stands; the guys were unloading the corn from the flatbed. So a couple hours later I picked up a half dozen.

$8/dozen, eh. Kinda high, it’s $4.80/dozen in the supermarket. But here I’m supporting a community member, not a corporate community member, and I know this corn has been picked the same day, probably within a few hours!

We still have one stand, Sitko’s Farm, that’s unattended; there’s a big stack of corn, some bags, and a drop slot. But only one.

I'd love to stop by a farmer on the side of the road and give them my hard earned cash for their corn. Would honestly like to do that for a number of vegetables. There is a farmer's market here, but I haven't been there in years - last time I was there it was 80% crafts and health tonics and supplements and various other retail-type things, might as well have been a flea market. Not a helluva lotta real fresh fruits and veggies that day, so I haven't been back.

There are only a few stands left around by me (honors system!) and I don’t bother buying from anywhere else. In my experience even the worst corn from a stand tastes dramatically better than the very best grocery store corn. I’ll support that any day.

We have a corn stand literally right down the road from the house. I started driving by a few weeks ago and he finally opened. The old farmer has fields upon fields of corn. He also has some other vegetables at the stand but mainly corn. Just bought a baker's dozen 2 weeks ago for $4 or $5. Deliciousness!

To their credit, when it’s in season Wegman’s gets their produce from local farmers; the bins will say, “Thomas’s Farm”, “Brace Orchards”, etc.. But this way I’m getting today’s corn, which is worth a premium, and I’m paying the guy who did all the work directly.

Farmer’s markets are sometimes (often?) resellers. I got no problem with that, this is America and people have a right to earn a profit. I just try to keep my eyes open when shopping at them. If the broccoli looks like supermarket broccoli, then they got it from a distributor. Waxy cucumbers, pink tomatoes. Watermelons in Pennsylvania in June. That kind of stuff.

I went to my local farmer’s market one time and saw some fully grown peppers that Amanda was growing in the backyard at the same time. Not even close to ready.

“Wow, those peppers are nice. We are growing some but they are not ready.”

“Yeah, we get them from Florida.”

          Local sellers, humph.

Very few "Corn Stands" left around Los Angeles. A few miles from my house where I grew up, there was a corn stand in Culver City on Culver Blvd called Lopez Ranch. We used to go there every year. Lopez parents passed away, kids squabbled over the property and ended up selling the land for Condos. The Ranch was right across the street from the old Huges Aircraft Company were Howard Hughes had the largest private airfield on the west coast.

Corn in grocery stores may be cheaper, but most I suspect are GMO. I pay more at produce store that sells local and regional farm goods.

Glad to hear your stands are now open. We have one we have frequented for years just up the road. Seems like every year they say it is probably their last, but when early Summer peeks its head around again they are back staffed with the same ladies as before. We start eating their early crops the minute the doors open up for the season. I’ve been eating two cobs everyday for the past several weeks besides Kathy having her one. I know where the corn and other produce are coming from because their fields surround their tiny parking lot.

Best of eating to you all.

2 cobs a day sounds about right. I can’t eat that much any more at one meal, but I think I should consider having a cob with breakfast.

My mom was sweet enough to bring the first picking of the Iowa sweet corn near my hometown when she came to visit us in Kansas. Was spectacular. Fresh sweet corn is always tasty, however, the soil from which it arises makes a difference. I like the sweet corn here, however, I'll take Iowa corn over any other.
