My sister gave me a mini basil plant

That’s it in the front pot. This is really nice! I had to look up mini basil, it seems there are several varieties. Based on what I read: color, leaf shape, and flavor; this is mini windowbox basil. It’s a brighter green, with a more pointed leaf, and it has a sweet taste without any licorice-y overtones. We used it in a Caprese, it makes a nice presentation with just the leaves pulled off the stems, no tearing of chiffonade.

I use a lot of basil, so much so that if you look closely you can see I actually keep it in the kitchen, on the inside of the window, there to the right in the photo. I cut way back on my herb varieties this year. I wasn’t using marjoram, the dill and cilantro always bolted, and mint and parsley took over the entire garden. Now I just have the chives (for garnish), thyme, oregano, sage, and rosemary. I buy the parsley and cilantro as I need it.

My oregano is far more invasive than my parsley. Maybe it is a climate issue.

Mine was getting out of control a few years ago. I plant less and less oregano each year.

How timely. I was just thinking last night I need to find a way to grow basil indoors as I am about to find myself getting into pizza making.

The one herb I wish I could grow is cilantro. I go through so much of it and it just recently went up 10 cents at HEB. But down here in this hot climate, if you blink, it bolts.

(Supposedly there is a genetically-modified variant that retards bolting, but I have not tried it.)

Try a Latin market, sometimes its cheaper there. Other produce too.

I have had zero success growing Slow Bolt Cilantro. Itbnbolts so fast I can’t imagine what regular cilantro does. My advice is shop at your local Fiesta and forget growing it.

Given its short growing life and how relatively cheap it is (I pay $0.48 for a bunch), these fields that grow cilantro must be ridiculously vast. I need to look up how they do it.

When I grew cilantro using flood method hydroponics I had no issues with bolting and I had so much I was just cutting it and giving it away to others just to get rid of it.
Since I packed up my hydroponic table and turned to soil, I haven’t grown a single plant successfully in years.

My cilantro bolted within a week, pretty much as I had expected but good luck convincing a 12 year old girl that we shouldn't have cilantro in our planter

Love basil. Not heard of a mini variety. One my favorite herbs. Love basil pesto. We grow a lot of dill, sage, oregano and parsley along with the basil.

Park Seeds Minette Basil. This is one of my favorites!

This plant grows beautifully in a pot. Just trim flowers off and it'll keep growing for you.

I just bought a small LED grow light garden from Clickandgrow.com to grow cilantro. I've tried outdoors, just too hot here. Starting off the grow light experiment with cilantro, basil and chives.

This is something I've always wanted to do myself....a small thing of one or two herbs growing indoors.

Michael - I've had the Clickandgrow 3 since Tuesday 7/8. Put it together same day I received it, the basil has already sprouted.
It's not cheap but it seems really simple.
If it works out well I will probably buy the 9 plant model.

I started a herb garden in a raised bed this year. Chives, parsley, oregano, sage and basil. I planted rosemary and mint in separate pots. The parsley grew faster than I could use it, blocking the surrounding plants from getting sun. Three times I cut all the parsley off just above ground level and threw it away because there was so much. Basil shot up and bolted when it got hot here, just cut it down this week.
