Carrots: baby peeled v original long

What is the collective preference? For 40 years we have been buying the short peeled version, due to convenience. Any reason to change?

Not really. I recently got a bag of the "need to be peeled." Prefer the little dudes.

I also prefer the baby carrots, but SWMBO prefers "real" carrots, so guess which we buy.

Depends what I'm using them for? I don't peel (only scrub) for mirepoix, because I'd rather cut a couple large carrots than wrangle a bunch of slimy "baby" carrots.

I use the ready made baby carrots for most everything it's just too convenient

Huh. The only reason I’ve ever used those little peeled ones were for school lunches or to dip in hummus. I’m a fan of the “original long”. Beautiful and delicious.

Always the big ones. I might sometimes pay more for slightly prepared food (deboning chicken thighs is a real PITA), but to me, paying a premium for baby carrots is like buying broccoli florets instead of crowns or whole.

Yeah, we shop with a sense of economy here too.

The big ones are easier to grill than the little ones, but for snacking it is another story.

Yeah grilled carrots are so good.

We have some of the little ones right now, b/c SWMBO likes them for a side with lunch. I like them, but generally get the big ones (have those as well right now) for all cooking uses. I find the small ones get slimy and go bad way faster than the big unpeeled ones. Plus, its pretty easy to make a bunch of carrot sticks if I'm snacking, and easier to slice them for salads or cooking.

I use both depending on what is going on. If I want some just for dipping in ranch, I get a bag of baby cuts.
My dogs like them too, so it is easy to slice the baby cuts into small pieces for them to snack on.

If they hear me cutting carrots, they come running.

The large ones have much more flavor but the little ones are okay. And easier to just grab and use with a dip. But I will peel and slice my large ones for eating raw also. Do believe they have more flavor

Yeah, this is a weird thing. So the little ones are carved from the big ones. But for some reason, they always taste like plastic. They always taste like the bag that they came in. It’s like sticking a banana in your sack lunch. Your peanut butter and jelly sandwich is gonna taste like a banana. Always get the long ones

I prefer the fresh ones and my dog agrees. For some reason he won't eat the 'baby' carrots. He loves the long ones as much as a horse does. I think he is trying to tell me something. For convenience, occasionally I will buy a bag of the little ones but when I throw one to him he just drops it

My dogs must not have much of a palate. They eat either the whole ones cut up or the baby cuts.

My dog would eat carrots like crazy. Most any vegetable though

Tormented by the thought that some were thinking that only a spendthrift would buy baby peeled carrots, I checked prices. $1.29/lb for loose long. A bit less for packaged peeled baby, and about the same for packaged long carrots. Got some long ones to glaze. Looks delish.
