I’ve lived in Chicago’s suburbs my whole life, and had never heard of a hatch chile until the subject came up here last summer. I was able to find a few small bags for sale, but there weren’t any cases available, and there certainly wasn’t any hype.
So last night I’m reading the Jewel (large Chicago grocery chain) ad in preparation for our weekly shopping trip, and I see this:

We decide to take a drive to check it out, and it’s an EVENT! Big signs at each door insured that everyone knew what was going on.

There’s maybe a hundred cases stacked in front of the store.

There’s a guitarist playing (no pic), there’s samples of fresh made hatch chile salsa and cheese dip (both delicious, no pics), and they really were roasting them on site.

The parking lot smelled amazing. Their FB page mentioned hatch chile enchiladas, but someone dropped the ball on that, much to our disappointment.
OK, they only had these events at five stores, and there’s probably a hundred Jewels in Chicago, but it’s coming. Hatch chile fever is spreading. Can you feel it?
