    Hatch PSA

I ordered 10lbs of peppers from the Hatch Chili Store that were delivered a few days ago. 5 lbs hot, 5 lbs extra hot. After I started roasting them I realized I don't have any gloves, but I figured I'd be ok. Wrong! About halfway into removing the skins I realized my fingertips were burning. By the time I finished I had a bowl of ice water on the table that I kept putting my hands in. I think the ice water kept them from actually blistering. Not to self, keep a supply of gloves!!! Second note to self - now I am afraid to eat them ๐Ÿ˜• ๐Ÿ˜…

Stock up on Charmin. Don't settle for the cheap stuff.

It's the fluffy and absorbent alternative...

In addition to the highly-recommended Charmin, you'll want a goodly supply of ice cream ... your favorite flavor, of course.

May be a good idea to put a roll of pennies in the freezer

I can identify. Just last week I did skewers for a group of our friends. I did separate skewers of hot hatches, longhorns, and habaneras for anyone who wanted to add to add something hotter. After the party I stored leftovers peppers in two bins, one for mild to medium and another for the hots. Next night it was Kathyโ€™s turn to cook so she made Italian sausage rolls with onions and peppers. It only took one large bite to realize she had used the wrong pepper container. My mouth was on fire with tears running down my face. ๐Ÿฅต

Were they actually labeled Hatch chiles? I'm from NY and am trying to find some locally.

They were, yes. Wegmanโ€™s, if you have one near, but last time I was there I didnโ€™t see them.

You might be able to find some in the frozen section. If you find fresh Anaheims they are the same pepper, just grown in California and other states outside New Mexico.

I grew some this year. Stir fries half a dozen. Wasv like someone threw tear gas in the kitchen. Eyes watering, coughing, had to air everything out.

Hey Panhead John it looks like first batch of chili this year will be made with meat from a young horse that was choked by a tie.

The label was on the other side. But as Willy has mentioned, most of them arenโ€™t really from the Hatch Valley, itโ€™s more of a mythos.

My hack for preventing intestinal distress when eating hot foods is to take a Culturelle probiotic before the meal. Makes a huge difference for me.

as a kid we used to buy cinnamon oil from the pharmacist and roll toothpicks in it to get cinnamon sticks. Went to pee after that process once and went screaming to mom ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

In grade school we made a business of selling cinnamon toothpicks and even cinnamon soaked strips of paper for 5 or 10 cents each. It was a big fad when I was in the 4th or 5th grade for sure.

jfmorris Thatโ€™s what we did! 35 cents for the oil, box of toothpicks, fold them for 5 cents ๐Ÿ‘

This year's Hatch crop does seem exceptionally hot. Drought? Climate Change? We made a batch of green chile stew last night from a fresh roasted package labeled "Mild" and it was literally too hot to swallow without choking. As a native New Mexican when I say too hot to eat I mean center of the sun hot.

Wow. I haven't touched a hot pepper in a long while. Linda can't eat spicy. She was ready to sue a local eatery because she told them no spices and there was white pepper in the mashed potatoes. No ambulance, but it was close...

I used to make my own salsa generally with jalapeno, habanero and whatever else was plentiful and cheap. Garlic and cinnamon was my favorite.

I thought of buying 10 pounds of these from the Hatch Chile Store last night after reading this discussion, but the fact that I would have to pay $37 in shipping for $40 worth of peppers was off-putting. Any lower cost shipping than 2 day led to warnings that it would not arrive fresh and might be ruined.

I'll have to live with the pound or two I already roasted and froze until I see these in the grocery store again next year. They've already disappeared from all the stores here in Alabama, after showing up in early to mid August.

Yeah. I just preordered some reds, I maxed out my order to 25 lbs so that the total cost per lb including shipping was just deep breath instead of nope.

I almost choked when I saw the shipping costs too. But I ordered some a couple years ago and I really liked them so I just sucked it up and bought them. They should last me quite awhile.
