Fresh seafood is one of the top two things I miss about living in Florida. My parents retired to the Gulf Coast and when I visited them I'd wake up before sunrise to go to the local marina and buy jumbo shrimp right of the boat, $25 for a whole dip net full (usually 5 to 6 lbs). I'd peel them, my dog Izzy would eat the heads while I worked, and I'd make shrimp and grits for breakfast for the whole family.

Seabrook is where I lived when I was in Texas. We frequented those shops down in Kemah on the regular

Yum! And what a good deal.

When my family and I visited SC we went to a similar place and bought a bunch of fresh shrimp and scallops. $200 worth, my dad & I split it. We didn't realize we bought fresh intact shrimp...and we had to clean and devein all the shrimps...ugh. But it was delicious and a fun memory.

A good shrimp de-veiner is a must! I don’t like messing with the heads either, I always get the headless ones.

We're headed to South Padre Island in a couple weeks for a winter warmer and I'm looking forward to plenty of fresh seafood.

I wish I could get fresh fish of any kind, but shrimp would be heaven.

Excellent brother! I go through Kemah daily. I work at Nasa. We live down here in San Leon, and we got our Hillman's marine within walking distance, but we go to Goldens at times too. We go to Rose's next door to Golden also. Probably more actually. They are all great man. Great seafood anywhere on Waterfront drive in Kemah. Golden, Rose's, Baybrook. Shrimps. Dang dang good.

What’s it going to take to get you, that motorcycle and that guitar to meet us at the Topwater Grill Lon?

The fine folks in Mobile and Baldwin counties keep us well stocked here in Bham. But one of my favorite things to get while at the coast are a mess of Royal Reds, like eating lobster tails. Just steam them with a dusting of Cajun spice and I’m set.

In East Central Florida, dip your own fresh shrimp . . .

Or, in West Central Florida, we catch our own fresh scallops . . .

When I was stationed at Patrick AFB in Florida, we would go out to the causeway at night, hang a light, and dip them right out of the intercoastal waterway. Sometimes, something bigger (spotted sea trout) would try to take advantage and they got scooped right up too.

Used to do the same from the Titusville pier many years ago.

The sad truth of this whole tale (as opposed too “tail” ) is a lot of the true Gulf Coast shrimp along the Texas Gulfcoast is fished out. Some of the shrimp we get these days is sourced in Central or South America and brought here frozen and sold as Gulf shrimp. It’s good shrimp but I always ask its source and whether or not it’s fresh. Shrimp twice frozen is a big no-no for me, that includes all seafood.

I worked over an hour once trying to vacuum seal 10 pounds of fresh shrimp. Their tails were so sharp they kept puncturing the vacuum bags.

I tried that with King crab legs once……I even tried double bagging em, they still poked holes. With shrimp I always put em in Glad freezer bags and just enough cold water to cover them. Then put em in the freezer. Works great and no holes in the bag.
