    Fresh Gulf Shrimp

In the Houston area between me and Galveston is a little town called Seabrook, Tx. It’s home to several seafood markets, most of what they sell is fresh off the boats trolling the Gulf of Mexico. Even though it’s only about 45 minutes away, I rarely go there for my shrimp, too lazy I guess. I’ve been there before for fresh seafood, but it’s been several years. Anyway, a friend of mine lives in nearby Kemah and called me the other day. Said he was coming in town and asked me if I wanted any Gulf shrimp, said he’d pick some up for me and drop it off at my house…..he had an appointment near me so it really wasn’t out of his way. Hell yeah I said!

One of the few grocery stores that sells fresh, not frozen, Gulf Shrimp is HEB. I just checked and they want $11.99 lb for theirs. My buddy Mark got mine for $5.79 lb for the large/jumbo size……Hell of a good deal! Anyway, I had him bring me 3 lbs. and I just got through bagging em up and freezing them. This stuff is so much better than the farm raised or the Asian shrimp sold everywhere else. I’ve decided that from now on I’ll be making the drive down there myself when these are gone.

You're a lucky one, I am landlocked so the best I can do is frozen most of the time.

I keep telling you to make the trek with me in my bi-monthly run down there but noooooo. Too lazy for sure. Some of the best seafood on the plant right in our backyard. Enjoy your shrimp 🍤 🍤🍤🍤🍤

I’m good with the date but let’s monitor the weather. One more thing to be aware of, road construction down there is a nightmare these days. I might suggest a Friday, that is if others can make it. Saturday tends to be a cluster down there. Just some things to consider.

David has to work on Fridays, and then we’d still have to deal with extra traffic everywhere else from people working. I’d prefer a Saturday myself. 😁

There is nothing better that fresh shrimp. I can peel and eat until I burst.

+1 - ketchup, HOT fresh horseradish, a couple dashes of Worcestershire, dash of lime juice. Open those sinuses. 😋

There was a family in the town I grew up near with a shrimp boat. Boiled shrimp growing up was the absolute best.

When we lived in Rosenberg we used to go Galveston all the time and stop by Katie's Seafood Market. Could see the boats dropping of fresh seafood right out the back doors. Always really good quality and then stop by the Cajun Greek for a gyro for lunch or take one home for dinner.

That’s the stuff PJ! Those look delish, like we used to get around here. I guess I should look around for a good fish store. 😎

Yep, can’t beat fresh Gulf shrimp Johnny! I’m thinking I’ll fry some up tomorrow and have some blackened catfish with it….😋

Looks great. Flying down to the Keys tomorrow, looking forward to two weeks of fresh fish. My only chance all year.

I need to get back out there for some fresh seafood. I mean, it is only 12 miles from my house! The construction on 146 is just brutal, though. Although....I could go up to NASA Rd 1 and come into Kemah from the north.

We must buy frozen shrimp here in Ohio. My Giant Eagle carries a 21-25 wild caught gulf shrimp that the only ingredient on the package is Shrimp. No sodium tri-shit stuff or anything else.

texastweeter - Nah, I'll skip choking on the bones.
I grew up with that since nobody knew how to fillet a fish.

Also smoked honey brine bluegill is great too. Smoker_Boy as a matter of fact, my 7 year old holds the Texas state record for a green sunfish. We eat a "few" each year.

One thing I miss up North is blue gills on lite tackle in the spring (fighting little buggers) and walleyes in the summer.

During shrimp season we have shrimpers come by our business selling fresh off the boat shrimp - Neener Neener.

Oh, memories. I live on the gulf now (the other side) but still, I remember... I lived in Seabrook at one time, in the 1990s. I actually lived in El Lago, which nobody ever heard of (behind NASA, off NASA Road 1, had two astronauts on my street), but my mailing address was Seabrook. There was a market in Seabrook, don't recall the name and might not even be there now, where the line was out the door by early Saturday mornings. Live crabs, my niece used to try to shoo them out the door when nobody was looking (she was four, so was excused when caught) and the freshest shrimp ever. I still miss it. I also miss The Crazy Cajun on Nasa 1, where they gave up on napkins and just put a roll of paper towels on your table. Fun back then.

Sadly, the Crazy Cajun is closed now..not sure how long it’s been closed.

I know exactly where El Lago is. I lived a mile down Toddville road in the 70s. Still my favorite part of greater Htown.

What, freeze the shrimp? I would have shrimp cocktail followed by shrimp scampi or fried shrimp and several "good" cold beers while watching the Texans beat that team in Baltimore!
