We made a trip to Amarillo,Tx this week. While there we stopped in at one of my favorite places to eat SaltGrass Steakhouse. This place has some really good food for a chain restaurant. Their Click image for larger version

ID:	1828247 deserts are to die for, but their steaks aren’t bad either. I was in a mood for something different and ordered their grilled pork chops. These were by far the best pork chops I’ve ever eaten. They were better than most steaks I’ve had, even the ones I cook. When something like this happens I just have to figure out how they did it. Here’s what I’ve come up with. First they were obviously brined because they were so moist. They were grilled on a char broiler but a good charcoal or gas grill would work fine. There was a pat of butter melting on top of each of them when served. The butter made some good sauce to get on each bite as you sliced it. The star of the show turns out to be SaltGrass Seven Steak Spice. Yes I checked, they use it on the pork chops. I don’t recommend rubs often but this is worth getting. Mine will arrive this week from Amazon. I will of course try to duplicate it at home but if I can’t this stuff is in my line up to stay.

Its pretty solid. Like John Henry's its lower on salt as a filler than most.

Their food is very good, their carrot cake is beyond incredible, as is the cheese cake. My wife is a baker but even she says the carrot cake is better than any she can make. We get it to go after a meal. We’re too full to eat more after the main course so dessert goes home with us.

After seeing your comments Lynn, and reading many Amazon reviews……..mine will be here Wednesday. 🥸 This rub/seasoning averaged 4.8 stars out of 774 reviews, that’s a lot of love!

Damn David, thanks for the reminder! Just cancelled my Amazon order. On Amazon they were $12. a jar and I had to order 2 of em, no one jar option. At HEB they’re only $7. I’ll pick up one tomorrow.

Our local HEB doesn’t stock it or I would have done the same.

Must be a better SaltGrass than I went to. I quit going after several bad cuts and bad cooks. I sent a steak back that was way undercooked. They brought it back to me on a plate that was so hot, I watched it cook to well-done on the plate. It turned brown right in front of my eyes. I asked to be comped and watched my husband eat his dinner.

What, you didn't go to the Big Texan Steak Ranch for the 72 ouncer? I stayed at their RV park on a road trip 3 years ago and felt obliged to check out the restaurant. The first thing I noticed was what the front door handles were made of (if you know, you know). The food was just okay, but I did watch some poor sap do the 72 oz challenge. He beat the clock, but from what I could tell he wasn't really enjoying the experience.

The other thing I noticed is that Amarillo is definitely a FAFO town, and it's wise not to FA atall.

I did have some of the best Mexican food ever at a little hole in the wall.

The BigTexan is a tourist thing. Almost no locals go there. There was a little hole in the wall Mexican place on 6th street that was like a little Mexican mother cooked you dinner. I love it and the folks that owned it. The dad ran the register, daughter was the waitress, son bussed tables and mom was the cook. Her mole is still the standard I judge all others by. I love Amarillo.

The Mexican place I went to was just like that. Run down old building, lots of "Mexicana" furnishings and decorations, and fantastic food. I liked Amarillo, too. Tough town, but with a good vibe. MYOB and you'll be fine.

Carolyn I realize that SG is a Landry’s concept. Not a fan. Chart House is also a part of their portfolio. I did a lot of work for them.

I just took a look at their offerings. I didn't know Saltgrass was part of Landry's. I think the only other restaurant of theirs I went to was Joe's Crab Shack. I didn't have a good experience there, so I never went back.
