First Time At A Saltgrass Steakhouse

I rarely eat out at restaurants, especially for dinner. The last time was at the Spring MeatUp, when we ate at Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant in San Marcos. I’m out of town right now and staying at a hotel. There’s a Saltgrass Steakhouse within walking distance, so I thought I’d give it a try…I’ve never eaten at one before. Another reason I wanted to try them is to compare their steaks with what I can do at home. I get tired of my own cooking sometimes, same old, same old stuff it seems like.

The waitresses were all over me, practically fighting over who got to serve me the next beer…

My appetizer was a couple of “Range Rattlers”. Jalapeños, shrimp, Jack cheese with Ranch Dressing…👍

I ordered their Texas T-Bone with a side of mushrooms, onions and garlic butter….and their smoked Mac n Cheese. Gotta tell ya folks, I was impressed with everything. The Range Rattlers I ordered as an appetizer was pretty good! The shrimp was butterflied and stuffed with jalapeño and cream cheese, then deep fried in a panko breading, served with Ranch Dressing on the side…not bad at all. I give it a B+.

My T-Bone was cooked exactly as I ordered it, medium rare. Compared to something I cook at home, I was impressed! The T-Bone was only about an inch thick, but it tasted pretty darn good and I could tell it was cooked over flames. Another thing about this T-Bone that I liked was that it had a generous portion of the tenderloin. I would happily serve this to guests at my house. I give it a solid A-. The smoked Mac n Cheese was also pretty darn good! I could taste a smoke flavor to it and there was no shortage of cheese. My impressions of this place are pretty good. The service was great, the employees were friendly and eager to help. Now, if I could just get the waitresses to quit hittin’ on me while I eat….🙄

I’ve been to a Saltgrass once, when we were in Dallas for the manchild’s baseball tournament and from what I remember it was pretty good! This was probably 3 years ago??? But glad you liked it PJ!!

but they got nothing on your steak cooking skillzzzzz! I’ve seen those steaks you cook on the kettle!!!

I don’t remember the servers wearing that uniform though

Yeah they pretty good. I usually get the same thing you get minus the mushrooms and as a bone in ribeye.

I think you are confused. Those waitresses are clearly from the Tilted Kilt and not Saltgrass..

I don't care what anyone sez John. I believe ya when you said the waitresses were hitting on ya - with a 2X4.

The question of the day, though is... single guy, steak, side, app and beer. Over or under a c-note?

Welcome to the 2024 economy. "Historic economic recovery." Yeah. It's one for the history books ok.

DFPS, It wasn’t cheap, but not too bad for a steakhouse. The T-bone was $32.99, the app was $7.49, $3.49 for mushroom and onion topping, the Mac and cheese came as a side to the steak. What surprised me most was the price of my damn beer! $5.75 for a bottle of Coors! 😳 Before tip the total was $60.

I ate at a Saltgrass in Fort Worth a couple of times when I was there for 6 weeks for work back in 2008. I couldn't tell you a whole lot about it except the beer was cold, I remember thinking the food was good, and my employer was paying.

If it's edible AND someone else is paying, it always get a more fond recollection. lol

Looks like a nice meal. Did you bring home a bottle of their seasoning?

My brother is a fan, and gave us this a while ago. I assumed he bought it at the restaurant, but don’t know for sure.

Mainly, but I wanted to try a few of their sides too.

We eat at Saltgrass regularly. The shrimp, chicken and steak are good. One of the highlights of a meal there for me is their desserts. I’m not crazy about all the different weird things you can put in cake. The exception being their carrot cake! This stuff is GOOD. In fact the three best desserts I’ve been served all came from Saltgrass. They are in this order carrot cake, cheese cake, and chocolate cake. I’m not hung up on cake but these are that good. In fact I normally don’t order dessert when we eat out but we have ordered an extra dessert to go as we get ready to leave in the past. There are several attempts to duplicate the carrot cake recipe on line. The bottom line is if you eat at Saltgrass leave room for dessert.

I used to eat at the Saltgrass on I-45 South on Fridays as it was midway home from the University and traffic was always terrible on Fridays.

Those Range Rattlers are legit. I used to get the full appetizer and then a steak. I was also much younger then.
